Which Offense do you want?

That was the funny thing about the 2008 season, the box was stacked with 8 and sometimes 9 players in the box.  We won those games that year because of pure rushing.  I think dwill had 18 rushing touchdowns that year.  You don't have 2 backs with 1100 yards each and other teams don't stack the box.

How much is that play calling though? We can't say that teams didn't stack the box on Jake and make us run the ball at them. He'll we averaged almost the same passing yards a game with Jake.

Did the 2013 Carolina Panthers over achieve on offense though out the year? I remember this board being ecstatic when Jeff Davidson wasn't our O-Cord any more. It was said he didn't get along with Steve Smith, and ran a very boring, predictable offense.

What do y'all think? Keep with the status quo and keep Mike for another year and hope for a marginal increase in performance? Get him more weapons? I would say that both teams were very similar with talent overall.

This team needs to get rid of their RB. If your QB ends up with more  rush yards then them, they don't need to be working. Keep Smity but push Ginn and Hixon to take over first and second WR, so they will realize...either u shape up or you will be gone. Hartstock needs to go.  Put Tolbert in a more useful position where he's touching the ball more than this season. Get rid of the entire O-line because they are simply unpredictable.

and this board for example couldn't wait for the Jeff Davidson era to be over and done. But say what you will, he produced a more potent offense, although it crapped the bed in the playoffs, then Mike Shula did with Cam Newton.

 

Correction: Delhomme crapped the bed in the playoffs. He not only crapped the bed but he permanently stained the Egyptian cotton sheets, ruined the soft down comforter, diarrheaed all on the carpet while trotting to the bathroom and then proceeded to clog the toilet.

There's no way Turner is coming here for a lame duck coach unless he feel as if he will inherit the hc spot.

 

I don't think he will ever get another HC job again and I hope he realizes that.

The real difference is these guys are 5 years older. Give me that oline, rbs, and Smitty with their youth back and we would be right back in it, especially with the addition on Tolbert, Olsen, and Cam. Time to give this offense some more talented youth this offseason.

Well, someone has to say it: A hybrid of Chud's 2011 and 2012 offense, modified to fit Cam's growing skill set in the pocket (with a beefed up O-line of course).

The 2008 team had some talent, but we were also near the bottom of the league that year in TOP per possession, plays per drive, and three and outs. 

 

We also were in the top 10 in number of possessions.

 

That was probably a worse run offense with much more talent than 2013.

 

Our defense was really good that season, but ranked in the bottom half of the NFL in Yards allowed and finished 12th in points allowed when it was really probably a top 5 defense talent wise..

Notice Cam's weapons are almost the same. New Car with an old engine. We need an offense that features Cam's skills. Everyone says we have an offense built around a power run game, and I'm like powe run game? That's not what I'm seeing

We have a good system and Shula did a good job for the most part. This offense has largely poor personnel outside of 5 or 6 players. Outside of Kalil the line was not good. People forget how many o linesmen we lost this year. Most teams would have been done but ours kept chugging along.

interesting fun fact.  With the exception of his first year, The team defense of Shula coached offenses has never ranked lower than 3rd in the NFL in yards allowed or 5th in points allowed.

 

97-99 in Tampa, their defense was 3rd-2nd-3rd in yards allowed and 2nd-5th-3rd in points allowed then went to 7th and 9th respectively the year after he left.  It was arguably TB's defenses best 3 year span in history (although they were #1 in both DPPG and DYPG their Super Bowl year)

 

When Shula took over in Tampa the defense of that team went from ranked 27th in the league in total yards to 11th, and then to 3rd.  the year after he left, the defense went from 3rd in DYPG to 9th in total yards and 3rd in DPPG to 7th.

 

Carolina last season was 10th in DYPG and 18th in DPPG.  They bumped up to 2nd in both this season.

 

There is a correlation to the Shula offenses and the defenses that coincide with him.  He is better for defenses, and everywhere he has been the defenses has always improved under him.

 

So, I am not sure what all that means, except to say that Mike Shula as OC, is possibly the best DC in the NFL  :P

I dont want either of those offenses.  Cam is a passer, let him pass.  Make Tolbert the primary RB.  Draft Cam two legit WRs or a WR and TE and watch what he can do with his legs if we became a pass heavy team with Tolbert threatening to catch passes out of the backfield or pound it up the middle on run plays.  In an ideal realistic world we draft a stud WR/TE in the 1st, OT to replace Bell in the 2nd, WR/TE in the 3rd, BPA after that and sign a good CB in FA.  We've got Guards, half of them were on IR this year.  We need an OT to replace Bell (and hopefully take over for Gross when he retires, I think he might sign year to year contracts for another year or two) and that's pretty much it on the O-line.  We need weapons for Cam and a CB, and I think CB will be easier to sign in FA.  Vonte Davis and Verner are FA, as well as a couple others.  If we can just make one good big signing in FA and it's a CB we can focus on weapons in the draft for the O.
