Question on Hardy

I think more importantly than looking at sacks is looking at the overall impact.  If you take Greg Hardy off the team/defense how much does it hurt?  We also saw the difference when Charles Johnson was out or hobbling, I can't begin to imagine what would happen without Hardy.

Guys like that are worth it regardless of a stat like sacks.

I am really back and forth on the Hardy issue. When he plays going forward, opponents are going to slide resources toward him and make it easier for the rest of the guys to go after the QB. The two most important players according to some are your QB and pass rusher. Since the NFL is a passing league, you can't over pay for either of those positions.

On the flip side, can we afford to have $25 million a year in two players? You can't. This is what ends up happening to good teams. You have to make choices, and CJ is already under contract.

At this moment, my heart days keep the Kraken but my head says tag and trade.

Glad I'm not a GM...

SO what do you guys think. Do we spend a ton of money and risk not signing other improvements for this inconsistency?

If he had come out and had a sack or two and a half a dozen QB pressures against SF I would have been PAY THE MAN.

He dominated against inferior tackles.  (for the most part)

I honestly think we could get as much production out of the back-ups we have.  He main value is discipline in the running game. He knows his assignments and contains.

I would hate to see him play for someone else but would not throw a blank check at him either to stay.

I love the guy.

He is a member of this forum (not a factor) has a Great motor, is very intense player and motivated to win.  You gotta love it.

Worth a lot more than he is getting now.  Is he a top 10 DE?  All a matter of opinion.  I think that if he goes to another team as the DE that faces the LT.  He is not going to be as awesome as he was here.    That said, someone will be willing to pay him top dollar because the hype machine and his agent ability to squeeze top dollar for his clients.

Gettleman won't be blinded by the 15 sacks as a top reason.  He'll use who he did it against.

In my opinion, if Hardy leaves and we are able to pick up Jared Allen, I wouldn't consider that a big drop in production.  If we were able to get Jared Allen, I wouldn't trip over losing Hardy that much.  Not only can Allen put up sack numbers, but he also carry an attitude that is equal to a Hardy.  It's not a "Kraken" attitude, but it is equally gritty.  I don't see what all the concern is about over losing Hardy in all honesty, with a guy like Allen out there. (Who will cost less money)

On one hand you want him because of the bookend DE's are important in a passing league.  Second, having pressure on a QB from your front four is what made the defense great, especially with the patchwork secondary.  We saw Sunday what happens to that secondary with the front four gets no pressure.

On the other hand, the RB situation has us over the barrel.  We also don't know how Hardy would play AFTER getting a big deal.  What is his motivation?

Bottom line for me, I would love to resign the guy, but mistakes in our RB situation will keep us from being able to keep him.  $22 million is not too much to have tied up in DE's if they are super productive and give your back 7 the chance to fly around.  But, $$$millions is waaaaay too much to have tied up in RB's, especially since the league and its rules have changed to favoring a passing game.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.  So, tag and trade, and make the best out of a bad situation.  Gman has alredy got his plan, he will not waver.

Tag him and trade him for picks if at all possible. I'm cool w/Alexander and Addison rotating on that side, plus maybe a Mitchell-type free agent or draft pick (remember, G. Hardy was a 6th round pick). We've got Big $$ on the other side, the death star, Luke, TD, Klein--that's still a hell of a front.

I can guarantee you we wouldn't have won the second NO and ATL games. That alone would drop us out of the playoffs.
