Buyers, Seller, Or Stay-putters?

Thats the question as the deadline approaches, should we buy, sell or stay.

In my opinion, we should become sellers at the deadline, there is still time to salvage our 5-year plan.

Move I would make: Get MKG healthy, show he can contribute, mainly as a very good defender on a contending team, and acquire a late first rounder for him if necessary.  might have to pair Ben Gordon's expiring if need be.

Maybe move Sessions if possible, maybe he is a backup PG for a playoff team.

We have learned that Clifford is a good coach, and should be the man moving forward.  We should bottom out the rest of the season, ensure we get atleast 2 picks in the upcoming draft, and start the Hornets next year with fresh faces and optimism.

Whats do you think?

Stay put... draft well and sign some quality free agents with our 21 million dollars.

Now to address your post...

A late first rounder for the 2nd pick in the draft two years ago?!?! That's insanely dumb (and that's putting it nicely). Not to mention adding an expiring contract of 13.2 million dollars to the deal... I don't even understand!?!?!

Sessions is another guy on an expiring contract... no need to trade him.

Expiring contracts are golden to small market teams because they finally give them a chance to spend some money in free agency without going in the tax.

I've never understood the intrigue with trying to trade MKG. Clifford hired Mark Price for a reason.

I say keep MKG.

Trade Sessions if you can get something for him.

I think if there is anything this team has displayed as the season has progressed, it's that they are not there yet.  They can hang with a great team for a game, but in the playoffs as a low seed in a 7 game series they are not going to beat anyone.  They need more talent and better consistancy from their key players.

I don't want to see them panic and buy, adding a mediocre player at a high salary just to try and compete this year.  I think they could strongly benefit from one more draft and I don't think that only ending up with the low pick from Portland is a good idea.

I would never actively pull for them to lose, but I don't think trying to go all out and win this specific season is in the best interest of the team long term.

I say keep the young pieces and Big Al, reload via the draft and free agency, and be ready in the first year of the return of the Hornets to make an impact.

Trading MKG for a late first rounder would be arguably one of the dumbest moves this franchise has made in its history. And that's saying something. Especially attaching an expiring contract for no reason at all it seems.

A desperate team may even send us a late 1st and a bad contract for Gordon's alone. MKG isn't going anywhere, nor is Kemba for the record unless it's in a big deal to acquire an All-Star level talent.

Stay put or sell minor parts IMO. Not that we even have too many good parts to sell. Don't try to add an inflated contract for a decent name just because we could. Go to the off-season with 2-3 1st rounders (hopefully), with a nice FA signing, and this team could be back on the right track. BUT, it is contingent on keeping our 1st rounder, and actually landing a nice piece.

I may have under estimated the value of Ben Gordons expiring contract.

However, lets not pretend the value of an underwhelming #2 draft pick is huge.  (See, Derrick Wiliams).

I guess I shouldn't have said late first, maybe I should have said mid- first.

The more I think, maybe the MKG trade idea would just be trading to be trading.... is MKG a piece for a contender?  Yes. 4th best player on the floor, the man who spends the entire game focused on guarding the other teams best player.

Maybe we flip Gordon for some type of asset, then stay put with MKG.

But, you do make some valid points.

Blow it up and start over. Nothing on this team is really worth anything though and that speaks volumes. Pray we get lucky in the draft the next couple of seasons.

They have some real quality pieces, but they are mostly 2nd or 3rd option type of players.

Kemba or Henderson would be awesome off the bench as scorers, Biz offers hustle, defense and shot blocking off the bench. Zeller has a ton of potential to develop into a stretch 4. MKG is a defensive anchor and glue guy that can score 10-15 ppg and get you 6-7 rebounds, 2 assists and almost a steal and block a game. Al is a defensive liability but he's a good down low scorer and would be excellent as a second option. Granted these pieces should be better for where the team drafted them, but they are still quality pieces that you need to build a contending team.

What the team needs is to bring in a scoring guard either through FA or the draft. Move Kemba to the bench and take someone like Exum who can drive and kick and distribute the ball and play defense. The team could look really good going into next season.

Dante Exum, Kemba, Pargo

Lance Stephenson, Hendo, James Young

MKG, Taylor, Toliver

Aaron Gordon or Zeller, McRoberts

Jefferson, Biz, Isaiah Austin

If team finishes in the top 7 and gets the other two picks this is entirely possible. I would think that this team would be good enough to finish in the top 4-5 in the East next season.

Of Course there's other options, but they will be adding a ton of youth through this draft and FA with the situation the team is in.
