Upon further review, we should go o line in 1st round instead of receiver

Hate to say it though but they also drafted Crabtree top WR in that Draft, picked up Davis the top TE in that class, they drafted a 1st round WR who is no longer with the team.  They went out and signed Mannigham who is about the same stock level as Nicks is now, and signed picked WR FA Boldin.   Yes you can find a TE like Gronk and Graham late but thats rare, going by that excuse you could go late with QB and Succeed see Brady, Delhomme, Romo.  Or just waiting on your Franchise QB till the 2nd  Brees, Wilson, Kaep, Dalton.

Regardless Even with the "stud OL" they drafted when Crabtree was down at the start of the season and Davis hurt, they were struggling.  They get those 2 guys back to add to Boldin and the Offense was night and Day.  We have a Former first rounder Gross who will probably be back playing on a high level (when he leaves then ill worry about LT) Center Former 2nd rounder/#1 center in draft (high for a Center), just drafted a OG in round 2, a 4th round wh we thought could start on right side as rook this year, then well you have bell which will need some work.

WR's you have smith..........and ...thats..about..it.  LaFail and Ginn are not under contract but Ginn I can see being resigned.  We have to address the WR position is someway via early draft or Good FA.

If Gettleman does double dip OL, ill be fine with it though because I believe he has a solid plan in place building a top tier team.

Good point, but I feel Crabtree is the exception to the rule. Don't forget the Niners have also gone with Iupati, Staley, and Anthony Davis in the first round in recent years. 2 of those are Pro Bowlers, one just outside Pro Bowl range. Kaepernick also has Anquan Boldin (former *2nd* rounder came to the Niners via free agency) and Vernon Davis (1st round tight end, but Jimmy Graham and Gronk show that tight ends can be found past the 1st round).

What OL prospects are going to be there worth a first round pick? There likely be a guard or two that are worth it but no OT's are going to be left that have a first round grade. There's 5 OT with first round grades and all are going to be gone before the Panther's pick at 28. No replacement for Bell or replacement for Gross in the first at the 28th pick with out giving up some extra picks to move up to snag one of the OT's with a first round grade.

That is what I was thinking, unless somebody drops. The value is going to be at WR and DB and maybe TE.

They had that exact OL earlier this season, they struggled.  They gave up SIX sacks to us.

That was when they pretty much only had Boldin.

Then Davis got healthy, Crabtree and Manningham came back then they were a whole different team.  They were like us now (only Smitty) only had Boldin (they already were so deep they traded away their 1st round WR from years years prior).  They got weapons back (like we are asking in the draft.  the result.........................well you tell me the difference in the 9ers we played earlier this season to now.  Could Blitz ol Kaep this game, couldnt load up the box to stop Gore.

Gore ends up having a field day, Kaep when rushed only has pick who to throw to when scrambling like Cam.  Cam when scrambling well has to pretend to play sandlot ball and wait forever for someone to get open.

People dont seem to realize the Niners have had that offense line for a WHILE. 3 FIRST ROUND PICKS.  And they didnt become relevant until they got a QB AND RECEIVERS. Skill positions matter.

While we have a tremendous need at wide receiver, we also have a tremendous need at offensive line. Let me remind you we played this year with Jordan Gross (contemplating retirement), Travelle Wharton (already retired once), Nate Chandler (practice squad defensive tackle), and Byron Bell (the worst starting o lineman in the league).

The need at receiver is apparent with 2 of our top 3 receivers entering free agency and our #1 turning 35 before the 2014 season. We should draft a receiver, possibly in the 2nd and/or 3rd rounds, but 1st round receivers just don't have enough value. They don't translate into success on the field.

2013 1st round receivers:

Tavon Austin

DeAndre Hopkins

Cordarrelle Patterson

2012:

Justin Blackmon

Kendall Wright

Michael Floyd

AJ Jenkins

2011:

AJ Green

Julio Jones

Jonathan Baldwin

2010:

Demaryius Thomas

Dez Bryant

2009:

Darrius Heyward-Bey

Michael Crabtree

Jeremy Maclin

Percy Harvin

Hakeem Nicks

Kenny Britt

Look at that list and tell me how many receivers you see that are both major contributors and on Super Bowl caliber teams? There's Demaryius Thomas (arguably a byproduct of Peyton Manning) and Michael Crabtree. The rests are busts or are on teams on a downward trajectory.

Meanwhile, of the four teams left in contention, there are EIGHT players that were selected to the Pro Bowl either this year or last year. 5 were drafted in the 1st round, 2 in the 2nd, 1 in the 3rd. Curious how many Pro Bowl receivers there are? ONE amongst the 4 teams: Demaryius Thomas and who knows what he is without Peyton Manning. Seattle's best receiver this year has been Golden Tate; New England's has been Julian Edelman.

So we should go o line like the best teams do. Having a better offensive line will allow Cam more time on the deep balls and will open back up running lanes for the backs. I like Amini Silatolu and Garry Williams, but they're not at the level of player we need to rebuild this thing.

Thoughts?

To make it fair you could have listed the OT selected as well. And there is no correlation to the success of a player and whether they're in the playoffs. Calving Johnson is not the playoffs.

Cam isn't going to get the ball to a "star" WR if he's running for his life or flat on his ass.  OL it is.

I will be shocked if Gman picks anything but the BPA Olineman in round 1.

He'll get the ball to them the same way he got the ball to the non "star" WR this year. We have a good OL. We're picking too high to find that much of a difference maker at OL. Most likely an OT at 28 is going to be on the bench for at least a year.

I love me an OT in the 1st round this year compared to last year when I was opposed to taking one. But, I've said this during the offseason last year and I'll say it again. Go look at the Giants draft history:

excluding this past draft (2013:Pugh), since Gettleman days as being a Pro Personnel Director for the Giants (1999) the NYG has only drafted a total of "2" OL in the high rounds (both in the 2nd). And, they were Luke Petitgout (1999) and William Beatty (2009).

New York has always solved their OL issues through FA. Some of the recent names were: Kevin Boothe, Sean Locklear, Stacy Andrews, David Baas.

Gettleman has shown that he is willing to follow the steps he was taught in NY of how to build a Championship team, i.e. having a dominated defense that can get after the QB. I think he will stay true to his philosophy. I believe Gettleman will address the OL position through FA once again this upcoming season. Hopefully: Michael Oher or Rodger Saffold.

But not he's exclusively running the show, he might wanna do it his own way. Plus that press conference he was harping on getting more lineman
