Draft Hypothetical: Running Back

Recommended Posts

I know what you're thinking...the Panthers do not need another running back. We have a crowded backfield comprised of DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert, and Kenjon Barner.

But, I got to thinking tonight after watching Gore pound away and then Moreno and Ball in the AFC game. Let's say we get some combination of OL, WR, or CB in the first two or three rounds and are on the clock in the third or fourth. Lets assume a bruiser type back like Tre Mason, Carlos Hyde, or Andre Williams is staring us in the face and Gettleman believes him to be the best available player.

Do we pull the trigger? I realize cutting Stewart and/or Williams has some pretty rough cap implications, but if Gettleman is confident that we can improve at a position that is creeping up our list of needs does it make sense? I guess what I am trying to say is, if we can improve at the running back position, despite eating some cap dollars, should we pull the trigger? This is assuming we have filled our more immediate needs on the first and second days of the draft.

I am pretty tired of seeing Stewart on the sideline and DeAngelo might be one of the more frustrating runners I have watched in a long time. He doesn't exactly fit our scheme either. He doesn't run down hill, has plenty of mileage on him, and goes down at first contact. On the contrary, young fresh legs and downhill power in the mold of Tolbert might suit is better moving forward. We have seen the success of Eddie Lacy and Le'veon Bell and the instant impacts they made for their respective teams. I'm not sure how those two stack up against the few I listed above but we need to be able to wear down defenses and get the tough yards when we need them.

I think a trio of Tolbert/Barner/(Mason, Hyde, or A. Williams) would be formidable and bode well for our future. Keep in mind, we will be getting Amini back at guard and he excels at run blocking. Get a right tackle and our offensive line is looking solid for next year assuming Gross comes back again and we have some competition at the right guard position.

Just something I was thinking about tonight and wanted to know if I was crazy or if anyone else has thought of this and if it may be a good idea.

Actually, I think the Panthers should target a RB.  However in the later rounds the talent pool is going to very small, Tre, Hyde, Sankey, and Carey will be long gone.  And if we're going by the 4th at the earliest and you want a bruiser that leaves us to choose from the likes of Wilder, Gaffney, and Storm.  Gaffney did pretty well for himself at Stanford, 1700+ yards and 21 TDs, but have to wonder how much his OLine helped him with that.  Wilder speaks for himself, highly athletic guy that can bowl people over.  Storm is a N-S runner, not extremely athletic, but he just goes forward.

Wilder from FSU correct?

In a perfect world I would want a bigger bruising back with underrated athleticism and some receiving ability. As I mentioned in another thread, I have yet to delved too deep into this draft class yet but I think we could find a better fit for our offense and an upgrade over Williams/Stewart in the 4th round. I think we need a change of the guard at running back and it pains me that our two stars have fallen from my favor.

I think Barner will turn into a pretty decent change of pace back to go along with Tolbert + a draft pick.

I think RB is a viable area to consider on draft day.  It depends on what we do with Williams and Stewart.  You can find guys in the 4th+ rounds of the draft who can be completely adequate.  We do need some fresh legs.  I'm not sure Stewart will ever be the same, or that Williams has that much gas in the tank (he was much better earlier in the season and wore down).

I think it's going to come down to BPA for Gettleman.  Last year, there was a bit of need, but he stated we need hog mollies to compete.  I think we're going to see that this year from the OL.  Would Barner be more effective with better blocking?  I mean, there was a reason he went so late...

I have a feeling though that the big names are going to be mostly gone by the time the 3rd round is over.

Anyone who doesnt believe that Carolina are in need of a RB is out of their mind. I really want the Panthers to rid us out of the Stewart mess, but DeAngelo will probably be the one who gets GUT this offseason. Dwill will not hit the cap as much as Stewart. I'm really crossing my fingers that Gman can find a team that is willing to take Stewart for a 7th round pick.

Barner is still impossible to guess.

I'd be all up in a Andre Williams, Henry Josey, or Carlos Hyde in the 3rd. If Gman is willing to take a gamble, Isaiah Crowell or Michael Dyer.

Isaiah Crowell in round 7 would be ideal, but the huddlers would do nothing but call him a thug.

I'd be down to take Crowell in the 7th. Ton of upside. Another guy I like in the later rounds is Terrance West from Towson.

West is a monster. he had one of the best seasons production wise this past year. something like over 2500 yards and 40 TDs. d2 but you want a guy to dominate like that on that level.i wouldnt be opposed to him at all.

RB's are a dime a dozen. Beefy lines make RB's more than RB's make RB's. Cut dwill and Stewart as soon as possible. Feature Tolbert with barner sprinkled in. Don't waste draft picks on rb. You can find guys off the street or practice squads who can be productive backs. Go line, receiver, DB. If I see another rb taken, I'm going to poo myself.
