Solidifying a fanbase

Recommended Posts

I live in Asheboro, NC and have mentioned before how terrible the area is in regards to supporting the Panthers.

Leading up to the game, I saw an uptick in people wearing the teams colors. I've lived here since 2006 and can say that I've seen more black and blue this year than ever. Two days ago, I watched people boo others for repping the oppositions colors on the street. I've never felt more "involved" as a fan. This morning, we went out for breakfast and the only thing anyone was talking about was the upcoming game. Not something I'm used to.

Then the game happened. I was sure that this newfound wave of fandom would be lost. Then my wife and I went out to dinner.

While we were out, I ran into three people wearing Panthers gear. I haven't taken off my Newton jersey and my Panther's hat all day. I made a point to talk to everyone I saw who was sporting the colors. I opened up the conversation the same way each time by saying "tough loss today". Each person just smiled and said "we'll get it next year".

Whatever else has happened this year, I think this fanbase took a step forward by be ready to support the team through hardship. I don't know how long this feeling will last, but it made me feel better today.
