Fudge it....Trade up for Sammy watkins.

I'm still not convinced that Watkins is so much better than some of the others. No way that David Gettleman is trading up to get him. No frickin' way!

This year we had a third round WR (KA) outplay yesterday's Combine star(TA), as well as every rookie WR in the field. Even the late first round pick (CP) with limited opportunities was better than the first WR selected in the draft, and could arguably become the best of his draft class, and a legitimate beast in his own rite.

You don't have to trade up to get the next big thing when the sure thing is probably already within reach. You just have to scout and draft well.

Im with the OP. I didn't think I'd ever say this, but follow ATL's lead when they drafted Julio. Hopefully it doesn't cost quite as much, but I trust Gentleman to make the right decision. Regardless, we have to get Watkins. He's like Smitty with size, and we need someone to step up into that #1 role as Smitty shifts I to more of a slot guy.

Watkins is a once in a decade type of guy with gamebreaking ability. Do what it takes to get him.

I love Watkins but he probably goes top 5 so we would have to give up our 1st this year and probably some combination of our 2/3 rounders this year and our 1st next year (and maybe more than that) to move up from 28.  I don't think thats the right move to draft anybody other than a franchise QB.  We would basically be giving up any opportunity to draft impact offensive linemen, DB's, another WR, or anybody else just to get Watkins.

Watkins is a tempting prospect and I'd love to have him. However, I don't like the idea of mortgaging the future. #1 receivers can be had for a lower price than two first rounders. Look at whats happening with Bob in DC. They tossed, what, three first rounders to get him? Dude is falling off the wagon and DC is on suicide watch.

I'd rather wait our turn and take the best player available.

don't say that. every team will have their bad year. And yes, the Patriots' will come too.

the thing that scares me about following the falcons lead in that sense is the fact that they're now reaping the logical outcome of that trade with both of their lines in shambles and limited prospects to fix it quickly.

the left side of our OL is getting old and we need blue chip picks to address that cheaply.  i'd be all about taking a wide receiver at the bottom of the first but burning future picks isn't appealing to me.

Not particularly appealing to me either, but IMO, Watkins is worth it. Julio wasn't even a natural pass-catcher and had drop issues. Watkins has all of the physical abilities he has, perhaps more, and he attacks the ball.

I have wondered if the Falcons troubles this season were due to that trade catching up with them, but I can't attribute it exclusively to that trade. I think a great deal of their struggles were due to turnover as a result of age/pay issues. No doubt, it DOES cost you somewhere, but I'm not sure we'd be affected like they have been as a result of making a similar move.

I also think Gettleman is good at finding offensive lineman in later rounds.

In the debate on Watkins versus Evans, we have to look at our offense.  I do think that Sammy is a better player, by a long shot.  I am not a scout mind you, just someone who watches football, but when I watched Clemson play...man...he was the best player out there by in large, and it wasn't close.  He would be a phenomenal Panther.  BUT the problem is going to get him when we have so many holes.  A guy like Evans does that one thing really well, which helps when Cam gets high with his passes.  And the red zone, and on fades, ect.  Evans can be very good when used effectively.  Watkins is just amazing and could very well light up the NFL next year, but he is going to be expensive in terms for draft picks.

Good topic.  I just don't want to mortgage the future and be wrong.  We still need Hog Mollies up front to allow someone like Watkins to run the route.  I think Evans is a better fit for us due to our current system, but Watkins is a much better player.  Benjamin would be quite interesting in Panther colors as well.  If we do go WR first, and the right guys are there, I do think we get better that's for sure.
