Beason told Hurney to draft Cam Newton

Pretty decent article from the New York media.

A few excerpts from Blackburn and Beason and quotes from Cam pressers

He was booed by his own fans. He was lectured by his own teammates, including veteran captain Steve Smith who admitted to giving him a lecture in sideline demeanor. And everyone picked apart his post-game press conference, which was a mixture of droopy looks, short answers and sighs.

It was the lowest point in the early stages of what was supposed to be a superstar’s career.

It was also a lesson his veteran teammates made sure he learned.

“I think everyone has their perception of what they think the NFL is going to be like once you get in, or what fans want to see or how they want to see you when you do lose a game,” said current Giants and former Panthers linebacker Jon Beason. “You’ve got to be the guy that holds it together, the guy who’s always positive, the face of the franchise, so to speak.

“So I think he grew. He learned that ‘Hey, I can’t be that emotional.’ I like that emotion, but you’ve got to come off a certain way, especially when you’re in the heat of battle in the middle of the game. You can’t put your head down. You have to say ‘Let’s see what the problem is. Let’s right the wrong.’”

In his third NFL season, that’s exactly what the 24-year-old Newton did.

“I feel as if I haven’t achieved anything worth mentioning — yet,” Newton said. “Everyone talks about the great season that myself and others have had, but we all come to each other and say, ‘There’s nothing worth mentioning unless we have something that we can all share with each other for years and years to come.’

“Those things that I really want, that everyone has set forth for this season, are all in reach.”

Newton even added that, “One thing about this stage is that it’s not going to be about me,” and it seems that his humble act isn’t an act at all. Linebacker Chase Blackburn was on the Giants in Sept. 2012 when Newton celebrated his meaningless touchdown while his Panthers were being hammered. He heard all the stories about his moodiness and selfishness, too.

But that’s not the Newton that Blackburn has seen since he signed with the Panthers last offseason.

“Cam has made huge strides since I got here,” Blackburn said. “You see one thing in the media and kind of how he’s portrayed on TV, and from afar from what I could see. But then to see him behind closed doors, to see him in the locker room, see him with the guys, you get a completely different perspective on him.

So it will matter how he plays in his biggest game of all.

“I remember when he was coming out and I was talking to our GM at the time, Marty Hurney, and I said ‘Hey, we’ve got to take this kid,’” Beason recalled. “My No. 1 factor was that he’s got the ‘It’ factor. It’s something you can’t explain. He played well in huge games and made huge plays and went out and won a national championship. He was a gamer and that’s the kind of guy you want on your team.

“So I expect him to go out Sunday and have a great game because I don’t think the moment is too big for him. I think Cam Newton, in his mind, is ‘The Guy’ and he wants to be the best to ever do it. And as long as you prepare and you work for that, I don’t see why not. He definitely has the ability and he’s shown this season that he can do it.”

“We’re going to go as far as he takes us,” Blackburn added. “That’s how it is, just like it was in New York where we were going to go as far as Eli (Manning) took us. He’s a guy that understands that. He’s been in pressure situations before.

“And the good news is he can handle it.”

Hmm, didn't Beason say Luke was the best player in the draft too? SmileyHmm.gif

Kind of makes me wonder what his opinion was on Star.

Honestly, towards the end of last season (2012), I posted on Beason's Facebook wall, "Could you imagine a front 7 with you, TD, Luke, Hardy, CJ and STAR LOTULELEI?!?!"

And Beason "liked" it haha so he wanted Star ..

I feel for Beason, dude gave it all for us, committed everything. To the panthers...would have loved to see him on this magical run this year... Oh well... Love ya beason!!
