I prefer to defer. It shows how much confidence we have in our D. If we can force an early 3 and out, then score on our opening drive, we will be in a position. I always like getting the ball at halftime.

Kicking off to open the game works best if you can force the 3 and out. Win the field position battle early. If you let them drive the field and score it backfires.

Until last season I would prefer to receive. But with our stunning D, I clearly want them to defer.

Kick and shorten the field for the offense. Just no field goals in the first quarter- and if passed the 50 and less than 3 yards on fourth down...go for it.

I wasn't suggesting we elect receive. Simply pointing out the strategy behind it is to gain early field position and if you don't do that it can put you in an early hole.

Atlanta was the only game this season we allowed a touchdown on the opening drive.
