Bay Area Writer: Kaepernick One-Read QB, Cam Actually Reads Defenses

I prefer real numbers.  Like team A needs to gain 3 yards to convert a 3rd down.  Do they do it? That is real.

It is an undeniable truth, that is factually supported....Carolina and Cam are BETTER at converting 3rd downs than SF

ESPN recognizes there made up stat.  That is it.  I once watched a game ESPN QBR said Jimmy Clausen was blowing Drew Brees out of  the water.  It is a joke.

Sure, this was a discussion about Cam vs Kap, but if you want to expand it to team vs team, thats fine too i guess.  Just keep your points in line, if you want to make a point on cam but using team stats, it doesnt really go well.  I dont use team stats to illustrate why like Kap in a particular situation- i use his stats.

Its not a joke if you have enough information.  One game isnt enough, you have to look at QBR with a whole season behind you.  Stats get too easily skewed with smaller subsets.  HIstorically looking at it through full seasons, and adjusting QBR over the history of the NFL, its very accurate.  All the biggest stars of the past are also stars in QBR.  All QBR really does is tries to quantify not just flat out numbers, but what the situation was when you performed.  DOnt you agree a thrown touchdown that wins the game should get more weight than a touchdown thrown in the 1st qtr, in terms of how effective a QB is?     Well , it makes sens to me.

You simplify it sir.

3rd and 4th scenario---Who is more likely to convert? The guy with higher completion % and more yards per pass? Or the guy with less yards per pass and a lower completion %?

So with this random made up scenario, who is more likely to convert? Because its hypothetical you can only ask who is more likely.  Can you objectively agree with that?

The guy/team who actually converts them more often.......is most likely.

Carolina again, 4th best in the NFL on 3rd down.....49ers way down at the bottom.

I am not simplifying anything.  I am talking about converting on 3rd down......you want to ignore the actual converting part and just throw out raw stats (which clearly by the 49ers BAD 3rd down conversation mean nothing)

Kaepernick is not a Top 10 QB. Get over it. One-Read QBs don't belong there. Moving on...

So because the system is rating Brees, Rodgers, Manning, Rivers, etc as effective QBs, you're calling it a legitimate system? Damn.

ESPN has admitted that QBR is horsecrap. The only fans that employ it are the homers and/or the bandwagon casuals.

I like how it's easier to admit Cam's strength when he's being compared to a guy like Kapaernick. Compare him to Andrew Luck then all of a sudden he's a running QB. Great and honestly written article though. That's the direction I want to NFL to go, when the media doesn't feel slighted to admit guys like Cam are great QBs who just happen to be athletically gifted as well.

team stats....for as QB like Cam who actually has some control over his offense matter.  CK is a one read QB who does whatever is called into him.  Cam audibles all kinds of plays on 3rd down (and again, the Panthers are so good b/c of Cam).

Check back in a bit.  I gotta run but I will go pull the numbers (got to find one more #)

Cam is the best running QB in the NFL.  That sets him apart and makes him better on 3rd down.  Cam isn't the best running QB b/c of a ypc or TDs.  The most impressive thing about the season he shattered the TD record wasn't the TDs......it was he lead ALL players (RBs too) in 3rd down conversions on the ground.

His arm and leg, has made Carolina one of the most efficient 3rd down teams.  No QB runs on 3rd as deadly as Cam

Cam's completeness as a qb has made him the single most dangerous weapon on the field at a given time

1. He can go throw his progressions and kill you with his arm

2. He can run all over if nothing is there

Wonderlic Score 2011:

Cam Newton, Auburn - 21

Colin "King" Kaepernick, Nevada - 38  (Also he got accepted to Harvard, but declined)

Anybody with a good living condition can get accepted to Ivy league schools. That's nothing. Let us know when he finds the cure for cancer or learn how to read a defense. Accepted at Harvard but can't deduce that if the primary is doubled then you must have man coverage all over the field, thus, advantage offense.

Yeah, it seems that's exactly how folks feel. Cam don't need receivers.

Also Cam not knowing how to read defense is another one of those myths. It goes hand in hand with  the "he's inaccurate" BS.

But it's Cam, the QB who the majority of people hate because he's gifted and they are not.

It's so much easier for the media to admit those things about Cam when he's being compared to Kaepernick et. al than when comparing him to, say, Luck and the likes. But it is what it is.

He fits the mold of the skinny geeky kid in school. Have you seen him run?

Truth be told I actually like Colin, well his story. Being adopted to where he is now is incredible.

But this week fug him. Scrub

I was kind of rooting for him against green bay. I don't want him to bust. I hope the game slows down for him with experience. But this week I'm on his ass like white on rice.

Where it talks about Cam going through his progressions. That's what reading a defense is.

I guess he took 'reading a defense' literally. No wonder so many associate 'reading a defense' with intelligence. Academia don't even emphasize reading a book as much as the NFL emphasize 'reading' a defense. I wonder who came up with that term in the NFL.
