This Is Gross w/ Byron Bell

How dare we want our team to be better. We should just be happy

Bashing someone doesn't make the team better. We get it, he's not very good but it's January. He's been our starting RT for 3 season now and it's not going to change this week.

Not that I am a professional or an expert, but just speaking from experience from being an Offensive Line Coach.  I have not seen enough detailed film on Byron to accurately critique him.

However, being an offensive lineman is much more than the amount of sacks you give up or how many pancakes you get.

He may not be a dominant tackle, but no team has 5 All-Pro lineman, or even 5 lineman that are all above average.

Byron is not great or even above average for a starting NFL tackle, but he definitely doesn't suck.

I wanted to come on here to see if the Bell haters were still on it..

After most games I see the blame put on Bell... Lafell.. and running backs

Bell might not be the most athletic but he certainly works for it and that effort can win. I think he can learn a few things from Wharton and carry on as far as impact blocking. No one compares to Wharton as far as busting heads out in front.. I love it

I haven't read the whole thread yet, so maybe someone has already raised this point...

You can admire someone as a person and acknowledge the hurdles they've overcome and yet still not admire how that person performs professionally.

I'm sure Byron's a great guy who's gone through some tough times, but he is not a starting caliber RT in the NFL. I'm sure plenty of people on this forum had some tough times in their lives, and are nice people (ok, that's a bit of a stretch) but I'm almost certain none of them qualify as NFL-level offensive lineman.

Skill and talent is distinct from dedication and perseverance.

lol.... I like that. Its like when in singing competitions the contestants scream "Well you couldn't do it!" to the judges.

Fairly silly.

Perhaps a more satisfactory reply to your view would be to point out that (from your present position) you should welcome the thought of someone saying about you one day that "he made it to the upper echelon of his profession and, though there were a select few who were even better than him, he tried his best to compete with them."

That, after all, is the position Byron Bell is in and why his trying hard (assuming he does) is extremely admirable. There are numerous thousands of excellent football players who aren't good enough to be in the NFL. Byron Bell isn't one of them; he's in the NFL, and so, is in the upper echelon of football players of all the football players on the entire planet. No doubt there are some NFL players who are even better at football than him, but if he's trying his best to compete with them, then that's darn impressive to me.
