IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO SHULA

Recommended Posts

I think Cam is the key. The defense will hold the 9hers under 20 points. Cam cannot be as inaccurate as he has been against the Falcons and Saints. His accuracy was awful those games. Paraphrasing here but Rivera said on FNZ that Cam's mechanics are poor when he gets overly excited which leads to overthrows. He needs to be grounded from the get go and not kill drives or his receivers with bad throws.

The will challenge the Panthers on short and medium stuff. Need To hit Ginn on a couple long throws to spread the defense to open up the other stuff.

Could the lack of 20+yd plays be because the O-line isnt giving Cam enough time? Or did the team realize that we lead the league the last 2 years in those plays and got a 13-19 record. We are middle/bottom of the league this year and we are 12-4. Simple & plain... Get a win, dont care if its 5yds ata atime...

Gettleman already came out & said they are assisting with the opponents scouting. You dont think they are studying what has worked against SF? Theres more personnel helping out the game plan than there has been all year...

If Cam is sailing passes on the 1st drive, tehn I believe we need to cut him loose quickly, let him do his thing to get settled. I also think it'd be a good idea to give the 49ers something they havent seen, something they cannot plan for. 25, 28, 35 backfield? 11, 19 & 89 on 1 side, 87 on the other, let Hixon go earn his? A 4 TE set like the Eagles did in preseason? Perfect opportunity for young Brandon...

We definitely didn't have enough big plays offensively this year, which is why we were ranked so low.  Other than that, we are pretty good on offense.  I do think that Shula needs to figure out a better ways for us to make more throws down field.  Maybe we really do need another receiver with more big play potential (I know everyone has been saying that forever).  Besides Smitty, no one is that big of a threat.  You could argue that Ted is, but he is really just pure speed.  Not someone who's gonna go attack the ball high in the air.  So maybe its a personnel problem? But then again,  we've had mostly the same people the past few years, and we were much better at making those big plays, so it really is hard to see exactly what the problem is.  Hard to put all or most of the blame on one person.

Smitty also had a down year statistically, for him.  He usually would have put up about 500 more yards in a season than he did this year.  That could have put Cam at around 3,800 yards for the year, and then we might not be having this conversation.  Is Smitty declining or is Shula not able to find good ways to get him the ball down field?  Or maybe Cam is just distributing the ball better?

While for the most part I disagree that Shula holds the key to the offenses performance, his game planning could be the difference. The Panthers took this off week to self scout the off/def. They have looked at their tendencies throughout the regular season just as their opponents would. This should give Shula a number of plays to fool/confuse the defense based on certain sets, down/distance and personnel. Calling one of these change of tendency plays could give us that vital 1st down.big play or even TD in the right situation. Of course, much of this boils down to Cam. He is always given two plays to call and can audible based on the defense (Hixon's TD catch was an audible). So not only must he get us in the right play, but most important, he must execute that play.

The one thing that I would expect this game, is the unexpected.

It's also on the offense. They need to actually execute.... you know, Byron not get dominated, Lafell actually catches his passes. Cam doesn't overthrow the ball or turn it over. Deangello finds the holes. We actually create holes.....

You know, the kind of things that have been problems throughout the season. Not JUST the playcalling. But he needs to do his part as well.

It never boils down to just one thing

Football is a game of many factors and variables coming together to produce a better output than the opposing team.

So long as Shula does his part and is able to find coverage and running lane weaknesses in the niners' defense, it is up to the players to get open and put touch on the throws, catch it, pass block/run block their assignments, etc. But if he's calling wildcats on second and long in the red zone, it's a sign that it's going to be one of those bad shula days.

I hope that someone has burned those pages in the playbook.
