nfl to increase # of wildcard spots in the playoffs

Yeah, this is a terrible idea. If you want to mess with the playoff format at all, then have playoff seeding ranked according to record. Stop giving mediocre division winners a home game against 12-4 wild card teams.

Nonetheless, to my knowledge (last that I knew) this was only discussed, but not agreed upon yet.

I hope they consider seeding on records with this change as well.  Inferior teams getting home games just because they won a crappy division is a joke.  IMO the NFL should reward the teams with better records a home playoff game.

It simply isn't broke... If anything, you get at least one team making the playoffs that isn't worthy of the accomplishment, which is far more often than a worthwhile team misses the cut.

Fun reminder that before 1990, there were 5 teams making the playoffs. The NFL expanded it to 6 while there were still only 28 teams

I don't think Dan Patrick would've reported it on his national show if there wasn't some truth behind it.  They can't technically bring it up/vote on it until May, but maybe he heard from enough people that they're going to vote to do it.  It's extra revenue for the NFL and a very positive economic impact on a third host city for that first round.  It would turn the Saturday/Sunday wild card doubleheader weekend into a Saturday/Sunday wild card tripleheader weekend.  Which, honestly, I don't mind at all.  The more football, the better.  And a better chance for the Panthers to make the playoffs each year.
