Cavs want Gasol for Bynum deal done Sunday

After several days of stalled talks, the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers made progress Saturday on a trade that would involve Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, sources told ESPN.com.

The Cavaliers want to execute a trade by Sunday so it can be completed ahead of Tuesday's deadline for Bynum's contract to become fully guaranteed, sources said. Trades need 48 hours to be finalized so players can have physicals.

The Cavs have been involved in talks with other teams looking to take advantage of Bynum's contract. The deal is for $12.3 million this season but if a team waives Bynum by Tuesday it will owe him nothing because the $6.3 million left on the contract is not guaranteed if he's released by that date.

On Friday, ESPN.com reported the Cavs have been in talks with the Jazz for veteran forward Richard Jefferson in a money-saving move for Utah. Cleveland also has considered keeping Bynum and using him as a trade asset before next month's trade deadline, sources said.

The injury-ravaged Lakers have been considering whether to execute a Gasol-for-Bynum trade because it would get them out of the luxury tax for the first time in seven years. More important than the $20 million in instant savings would be easing the pressure of going into the repeater tax in either 2015 or '16, sources said. If a team is in the luxury tax in four out of any five years, it triggers the repeater tax.

Sources say the Lakers, who broke a six-game losing streak with a victory against the Jazz on Friday night, also are seeking a package that would include a young player or a draft pick from the Cavs, which has been holding up the talks.

The Lakers internally have been debating whether they should trade Gasol, a four-time All-Star with the team, or wait for some of their players to get healthy with hopes of making a run in the second half of the season.

It appears these talks, which kicked into gear last weekend when the Cavs suspended Bynum for a game and put him on the trade block, could be headed for a resolution one way or the another on Sunday.

Wow... I know some here really like Deng, and considering our lack of depth at SF, you're telling me we couldn't have gotten him for Ben Gordon??? Yeah, they'd have to hold onto him for the year, but they save like another 6 mil on top of what they saved for Bynum.

Ridiculous.

I think they just got a great deal from the cavs. First off its been rumored that deng just recently turned Down a 3yr/30mill extension from the bulls. So they already know they can't afford him and are losing him.

They get 6million cap relief immediately, along with sacramentos first rounder this year(top 10 protected) 2 second rounders and the right to swap first rounders next year. That sets up the bulls for long term success. That kings first will become gold bc sac-town is a joke. And if the cavs are still underperforming next year yet can swap picks.

IMO Charlotte wouldn't have gave up that much for a rental in a weak east. So I think that's a great deal for the bulls. Glad we stayed out of it.

This should push Cleveland past us in the standings this season if Irving gets back soon. Add that to the Nets who will catch and pass us regardless and possibly the Knicks and it is definitely good news for our long term outlook.

Yeah I wish we would either start losing consistently or winning. None of These lossess to the jazz and magic. We gotta win those. But on the others hand I want a top 10 pick this year. So of Brooklyn and Cleveland and new York wanna pass us they need to do it fast. I don't wanna be sitting here at march with the 8th seed.

I agree, any seed higher than 7th and I could live with going for it but 7th or 8th will more than likely just be a pointless sweep at the hands of either the Pacers or Heat.

I don't know what kind of contract he's going to seek, but he wasn't resigning in Chicago regardless, after their medical staff nearly killed him last year.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
