If 89 gets in....

It means

Moss

Owens

Harrison

Wayne

Fitzgerald

Boldin

Johnson

Etc all get in....

And that they get in when guys like Megatron are wrapping up there careers....with comical stuff

HOF simply doesn't open the doors for that many

I fear Smitty will be a victim of the inflated numbers of the pass happy offenses of late even though most of his career was before the new pass interference and illegal contact rules and in offenses that more closely resembled the smashmouth football of old, not today's high flying spreads.  It would be nice if the voters would take those things into context, but I'm not sure they will.

Moss and Owens are getting in no doubt.  You could certainly make a case for Reggie Wayne and Andre Johnson (especially the latter given the QBs he's played with), but none of those players are the all-around threat Steve Smith was because none of them have substantial return numbers, and I think that gives him a little bit of an edge over the likes of Fitzgerald and Boldin. In that case he has a comparable resume to Wayne and Johnson.

Nice op but you are missing a few stats. He had a rushing and punt return touchdown in the playoffs as well. That is 9 touchdowns in 8 appearances and 5 wins. His playoff numbers are stupid good. His return touchdowns should add something to his resume in the regular season. Then you talk about Hall Of Fame moments, kind of like Heisman moments. It just doesn't get better than taking a kick return 93 yards for the touchdown on your first NFL touch.

If only there was a recognized statistic for drawn penalty yardage. Steve would be a lock for HoF and hold the record.

Steve has two things working against him, his stats and his reputation. But you can't put on Steve Smith tape and not think "damn this guy plays like a Hall of Famer".

Good catch... I remembered the punt return but completely forgot about the run. Add those up and he is 11th all time (tied with five) in total playoff touchdowns, and there are and needs only four to breach the top five. All but two of the players above him are Hall of Famers. For as good as he's been in the regular season, he's maybe the most efficient playoff player ever. That, combined with the return yards and touchdowns, are what I think will get him in the Hall if he keeps up his pace. And FTR Steve is the NFL's leader in all-purpose yards if that counts for anything.

If you want an idea of just how dominant playoff Steve is, think about this:

*In 2003, he led the playoffs in receptions (18), receiving yards (404), and receiving touchdowns (3)

*In 2005, he led the playoffs in receptions (27), receiving yards (335), yards per game (111.7), and receiving touchdowns (3). He also led the playoffs in punt return average (19.3) on three punts and was the only player to return a punt for a touchdown in the playoffs.

Those are massive numbers... and if Jake's arm hadn't fallen off in 2008, we could be looking at even larger ones considering Steve led the league in yards per game (101.5) that regular season.

If anyone wants to look at the numbers here's a link to Pro-Football-Reference. They have all of the playoff stats regarding league-leaders.

Just looking at stats the 2nd best WR with no ring is Henry Ellard at 13,777 compared to Smitty at 12,197. Tim Brown is at 14,934 and isn't a lock to get in with no ring but I think he will.

So get a ring and Smitty is in the mix immediately just needs to stick around.

No ring and he will need a significant amount of yards.
