I wonder how Cutler's contract will affect Cam's

top dawg

That certainly couldn't be because one quarterback is 30, and the other is only 24, no?

Not sure what you're getting at with the rest of your post. So because his value will be high, we should let him walk?

The market value for franchise quarterbacks was going skyward well before Jay Cutler signed his recent contract.

My point was if his value goes sky high, we sign him for $20m+ a year and our franchise goes down the tubes because we can't afford other key players.

Obviously Cutler has accomplished more than Cam because he's been in the league longer. But that still comes up in negotiations. How many playoff seasons, how many playoff wins, and how many Super Bowls, and best statistical seasons. These are things that matter when placing a value on someone.

No chance we don't extend him but shouldn't we (and he) hope it doesn't cripple the team?

Kinda wish people would let the "icon" and "entertainer" stuff die. Cam did before he signed with us. Now he is doing what he can to be a great football player.

he is a great football player, whether it's tacky or not he has a clothing line at Belk, numerous endorsement deals and kids, adults and seniors all starting to replicate his superman move. He is an entertainer.

He's made the playoffs several times, made it to an NFC Championship game. He's a polished passer compared to Cam.

You pay the man, or you let him walk and lose your franchise player, which would be incredibly stupid.

Again, you keep bringing up Cutler's "accomplishments", but the simple fact is Cutler has played 7 NFL seasons, Cam has played three.

Cam has accomplished quite a bit in his first three seasons, and he is only 24 years old. He's going to get paid.

I agree. But almost every decent QB fits this mold to some extent. I would rather give him credit for what he does on the field for his team.

If you take the time to monetize what Cam brings to this franchise, not just with on field performance, but to the community and long term prospects of the franchise, Cam at 18 million dollars per year is a very good investment.

Winning is important, but just as important is expanding the fanbase, merchandise sales, etc.

This. The cap number of not only a franchise QB, but a marketable one at that, is often a deal outside of just the playing field. His value, should he keep winning, will exceed the money he's actually on the cap for.

Different sport and he's the best player, but Lebron is making around 19 million in salary this year. If the Heat had to pay his "true" value, he's worth double that because of all the money he brings them.

Cam is going to get paid. People will freak out at the number more than likely, but it will be a fair deal in the end should all go well.

I take it back. Just looked up Cutler's career. Although he has had 3 winning seasons he only made the playoffs once. That is just pedestrian.

Jay Cutler through his first three seasons: 9,447 yards, 57 total touchdowns, 37 interceptions. No playoff berths.

Cam Newton through his first three seasons: 13,331 total yards, 92 total touchdowns, 42 interceptions. 1 playoff berth.
