Revis Could Get Cut By Tampa

Revis is a great man cover CB. If we could sign him to an affordable contract; I'd man him up the best WR and the rest of our defense would run its regular scheme. I'm sure that this won't happen. We'd be lucky if we can keep Hardy and not to forget about the 1 year deals that we may want to extend...

This EXACTLY.

Use Revis strictly to man up on the biggest threats on the other teams offenses and run regular scheme.

We all know he will wind up a Patriot more than likely.

haha... both guys are great but ted is to darn fast! h even slowed down to catch that Henne pass... hahaha... by no means is Revis garbage. That's foolish for guys around to to even fix their mouths to say. You's think we'd recognize garbage by now... smh whoa, what... smh

Id just like to pause this discussion and crown ron rivera as arguably the greatest defensive coach in NFL history. 3 different teams, a different scheme for each, different personel strengths, and each finishing as a top ranked defense. Find me ANYONE ELSE who has done that other than riverboat ron

I see. My question was a bit of masked sarcasm with genuine curiosity sprinkled in.

I agree with all of you to some degree. I believe we run a Jim Johnson scheme which is more zone than man but I also believe that in game situations where it would be more beneficial to man up at the line of scrimmage we have had to use zone to keep our corners from being abused. Even further to that point, if for some reason our pass rush is not getting it done we really have to play it safe on the back end to help the secondary out.

We play a lot of combo's, sometimes you'll see the CB's in man and the safeties in zone. We had some where Luke would drift to deep middle, the safeties out split (disguised cover 3) and the CB's were in man underneath. We do a lot.

There is not a snowball's chance that Revis comes here, but for the sake of argument I have zero problem accepting that we could use him and play to his strengths.

Not gonna happen, but I'd have no objection to it if it was possible.

We don't really use the Jim Johnson system as he was high risk high reward and blitzed more than 50% of the time.  In the red zone he blitzed almost every play.  While both McDermott and Rivera coached under Johnson, this current system uses much less blitzing than Johnson's system.  In addition Johnson used a lot of fire zone blitzes counting on the 6 or even 7 man blitz to get there before the quarterback could throw the ball.  We seem to blitz perhaps 10-15% of the time and perhaps 30% on third down in passing situations.  We also play quite a bit of zone under with 1 high safety when teams go to 4 receiver sets or spread us out.  That means that at least 1 corner and the nickel are going to be in man coverage which was quite often.  Against San Francisco I didn't see any cover 2 or cover 3 and at least 40% of the time we were in cover 0 meaning everyone was in man when we loaded the box to stop Gore.

As other have said you have to mix things up during the game so we will use man in every game again pointing out the need for good cover corners.  While some teams might get by with sub corners look at how Seattle has the ability to play man and zone and the luxury it affords them.  Something that will take us to the next level.

I keep seeing people talk about how we don't need to invest in corner because our scheme is zone. Just because we run a lot of zone doesn't mean we can start a pile of steamy poo at cornerback and expect everything to be fine. Good play against the pass had so much to do with our rush that nobody noticed that our corners were truly awful. Zone coverage still requires ball skills, instincts, awareness and measurables that the people we started just do not have, so if you want to take that next step towards defensive eliteness like I would you should have no problem with upgrading corner. Not to mention defensive schemes are more malleable than people seem to think so getting a man corner and making him take receivers on one on one isn't going to force the defense to play so drastically different

I agree with everything you just said. Revis will not be a Panther but if in some weird twist of fate he signed here I would not make a peep.

    • Start with Bryce, this is like his rookie year. The 1st 2 games proved her was wired wrong and it looks like (we hope) he needed a time out to reset and be the player that was drafted. He's still about a year or more away from being a top 15 QB, if the Panther give him another playmaker or 2 (a top WR and a decent TE) and maintain that line. Canales deserves credit as playing that card correctly to motivate (or refocus) his QB for one last shot to decide his and the Panthers immediate future. As a Panther fans we should hope he keeps improving as we invested so much to get him. CJ Stroud will never have a season like he had, even if he stays a top 10 QB. He's got great character so I'm rooting for Bryce to continue on his positive journey. Canales is playing the week to week thing with bryce perfectly. Nothings guaranteed, earn it weekly which builds consistency and consistency is greatness.  Keep the O-line. They've got to extend Brady C, along with Mayes that have a real good 7. Great job Morgan starting with the big guys upfront.  I really hope they draft a DE or OLB in the 1st round. Getting Brown back with A Robinson and what DJ has shown that we can have a decent D-line. Need a CB in the early rounds/ or a time FA to go with Horn.  The future as to next year being good enough to challenge for the division is within reach. Just show progress (win or lose) every week. Kudos to Dan Morgan. Plays GM like a LB. Tackle the problem and move on, don't just hope it works out. Find guys with your playing mentality and work closely with your HC to share a vision. Teamwork starts at the top and flows down.
    • Since we play the Panthers today and tmrw, we will have one gigantic double thread for both games. Today’s game is at 3pm and tmrw is 7pm.    After beating the Rangers and sending the those yankee bastards back to Cary, we get the Champs in the house.  Clean up the defense, no more lazy clears, and score baby score.  LFG CANES!
