When did this whole "spirit rock" thing get started at schools?  We didn't have spirit rocks when I graduated in 1996 in Virginia.

Spirit Rocks have been around for some time. I graduated in '92 as well and that was our class gift to the school.  Every year since the senior class paints the thing or the school does for fundraisers, etc.  Personally, I liked the one painted like a football...the first photo.

 

Edit: Kernersville, NC.  So, no...not just a Charlotte thing.
