Bucs Hire Lovie

Nah. Rivera was the strength of that D.

Bears defensive ranks:

2004: 21st overall
2005 (Rivera): 1st overall
2006 (Rivera): 3rd overall
2007: 16th overall
2008: 16th overall
2009: 22nd overall

Does the D aging have to do with the decline? Do you have RR's Charger's rank?

Why did he fire Ron anyway? Wasn't the D top notch with Rivera as the D coordinator? Maybe a personality conflict? If I was Ron I would still be a little bitter if my Defense was 1st and 3rd in the league for the two years and then got fired.

He didn't really 'fire' him. He just didn't re-sign him when his contract ended (same as the Panthers did with John Fox).

Why? Rivera was never really 'his guy'. He wanted someone else but kept Ron initially at the urging of Bears management.

Smith is likely going to do what Fox did here, and that's to get the Bucs to the point where they're a consistent threat. He's not a crazy genius like Payton, who is still probably the best coach in the division. And he doesn't have a train wreck of a franchise in the division like the Lions to give him two free wins a year. Or rather, he's taking over the train wreck. He got run out of Chicago because he could never get them over the hump, so to speak. And he will face the same problems in Tampa Bay, particularly so given how much more competitive the South is.

Hope he brought his disinfectant, BTW...

I think this sums it up well. He had real problems in a div that is very weak. Now he steps in a div that almost has no chinks in there armor. There is no bad coach in the south and he is prob the worst one.

Detroit wanted Lovie on their list and couldn't even get an interview with him before the Bucs hire.... I'm curious what the Bucs offered.

Ian Rappaport reporting McDermott is on the Washington and Cleveland list.

I disagree the Lions are a "trainwreck." They have more talent than any other team looking for a coach right now. The Lions need discipline and someone needs to pull in the reins on Stafford before he gets much older. Let's not forget Stafford is only 25 years old and has yet to be coached up.

When you look at the Lions and look at the big picture of off-field issues and the discipline penalties they take on the field, they need a coach who'll lay the law down with these guys.

Time to kill any "Lovie will lure Cutler to Tampa" nonsense.  He is resigning with the Bears through 2020.

Yeah, that's done.

Seven year deal.  Holy hell Chicago

If it's big money for a guy like Cutler, what happens to negotiations with Newton?

it's still happening, I don't know if Lovie is official, but I'd read both Marinelli and Frazier as DC.  I'm assuming he could get both guys on staff. Schefter has Marinelli.

It'd definitely be more ideal if Frazier wasn't also there.

I'd forgotten Marinelli is currently DL Coach of the Cowboys.

With that in mind, Schefter is probably right that he's the DC.  Would need to be a promotion unless the Cowboys were willing to let him slide for a lateral move (seems unlikely).

if jerruh jones was football smart, he'd be locking up marinelli as the next DC there in dallas.
