Hardy want "big contract he worked for"

Franchise tag number for a DE will be devastating to the cap next year. I believe it is 15m+

I don't see Gett signing up for that.

Hope we can get get something done. But he will be able to get more elsewhere with teams like Oakland having $60m+ of cap space.

2014 cap numbers not out yet. 2013 tag for DE was $11.175M

Offer him about 6.5 m a year for 5 years. If he balks, then franchise him and see what happens. If his numbers are still there, then offer a little more.

This is Johnson's contract.... you might want to rethink that $6.5M a year...

7/29/2011: Signed a six-year, $76 million contract. The deal contains $32 million guaranteed, including a $30 million signing bonus. Johnson is eligible for an annual $250,000 workout bonus in years two through six.

2014: $8.75 million

2015: $9.75 million

2016: $10.75 million

2017: Free Agent

Negotiating in the newspaper, great.

Let's focus on the task ahead in 10 days hmmmm?

After that bargain in good faith and/or wait for the Compensatory pick.

No chance Getts mortgages this Organization's future the way the idiot Hurney did with Peppers for 2 years with the FT.

Would be good for him and CJ to make 10 mill per year, I would go for that.  Unfortunately, CJ is overpaid.  One guy won't be hear as effective without the other and without dominatiing DT's

Can't believe this still comes up. Averaging 11 sacks a year as a starter (did it this year is only 14 games too).  Dude is solid as a rock.

And to whoever suggested 6.5 mil/year... Hardy would just walk out of the office laughing his ass off at that offer.  He could probably get twice that on the open market.

CJ is getting sold short here. CJ plays the tougher position of the two, and had better stats than Hardy until the Patriots leg sweep injury. IMHO, CJ is the better investment. While I love Hardy, let's not forget that 7 sacks came in the final two weeks - against a rookie tackle who had never started a game in week 16 and against an injury depleted Falcons offensive line in week 17.

The fact is we can't afford to franchise Hardy. It would take a 12 million dollar bite out of the 19 million dollar salary cap availability, while leaving us with over a dozen other positions to fill (including LT and all WR spots except one). We have more roster spots to fill than just about every other team in the NFL, and we don't have a lot of room to do it. I don't see any way Hardy comes back next year, unless he takes a below market contract and Jonathan Stewart decides to retire. Personally, I don't see him taking a below market contract. Someone is going to overpay. Someone will overpay big.

I know it pains fan bases, but sometimes the best thing you can do is pass on second contracts, because you almost always overpay. I wish we had done that on Stewart.

Paying CJ and Hardy 10 million a year is A LOT of money.... But those two together give os the ability to have people like Florence(489,706), (White(407,500),Lester(357,353), Munnelyn(1,100,000)Mikell(620,000), Mitchell(725,000)

When you can get so much production  out of the rest of the D... You can afford paying big money to the most important position on D in now a days passing league. Gamble has a higher cap hit this year than our entire defensive backfield and then we also have Godfrey, Hogan, DJ Moore, Nakamura all those together have a caphit close to 10.000.000 this year.. Auch.

As much as I hate it, I think you have to plan for the future. Cam and Luke both have extensions in their near future.

Defense wins championships, but if we don't have some type of X factor on offense it doesn't matter if we hold them to 50 yards. We'll lose.

Sign Cam and Luke...we'll find a DE elsewhere.

Isn't the cap expected to make a huge jump in 2015 or 2016 when the new TV contract is signed? Even if we give hardy a nice big payday by the time Luke and Cam need to be signed the cap might be significantly higher

and they have a huge need for DEs and pass rushers, so they could spend lots of money.

I read somewhere that the Raiders have something like only 20 guys under contract next season, so even with $60MM in cap space, they can't go dealing mega contracts because they basically need to sign an entire team still.

If we franchise him it will be with the idea of signing him long term not just putting him off for a year.  The tag costs 11.7 million all applied to the salary cap for 2014 whereas a long term deal could cost as little as 5 or 6 million in year 1.  That is what Flacco's 120 million deal costs in year 1 in salary cap. It is not next year but in year 3 that costs really escalate and you have to know how much dead cap space you will be shedding as well as where the cap will be when the salary starts increasing.  But honestly there are a ton of ways to negotiate a contract with a big number that only costs a bunch if the team continues to pay it and that will only happen if the player continues to produce.  I doubt that Hardy would have a problem with an incentive laden contract.  He said so himself.  As long as he is getting paid, he will do what you tell him he needs to do in order to earn it. Sounds exactly like a contract around 30 guaranteed for 5 years with another 20 million in salary and another 30 million in incentives like probowls, playoffs, and 20 sacks.  I  Iike superbowl MVP for an extra 5 million.  He only gets them if he earns them.

Could we sign AJ Green instead of Hardy after next season. Just franchise him for now. I don't think we can end up keeping all of our young talent. CJ, Hardy, Cam, Luke, Star...everyone can't make giant $$$.

if AJ Green came to Carolina I'd go nuts. Id buy a damn jersey the day they are available. I love aj hes my favorite receiver outside of 89.
