Another reason to like David Newton. Not All Candy and Flowers. Lafell Truth

top dawg

Someone needs to call him out, i think his ship has sailed. He's been outplayed by Ginn and hixon the last two games, he's been also running horrible routes as well. I wanted him to pan but we can find better easily time for hixon and mcnutt to get an increase role before this dude causes us a game.

That downfield throw by Cam in the late 4th quarter against the Falcons when we needed a critical 1st down that went right off Lafell's fingertips because Lafell loafed on his pattern still pisses me off.

Jacoby Jones of the Ravens is playing with a 2 year 6 million dollar contract. That is what I'd offer LaFell. It's also along the lines of what James Jones is making. Jones obviously caught more balls in the packers offense but if LaFell really is as good a blocker as Rivera says then id keep him around...unless DG sees a WR in the draft who can excel at both receiving and blocking.

A guy like Kelvin Benjamin or Mike Evans comes to mind.

he's a big receiver that hasn't shown some of that posession ability you might want.  I don't have a problem with a game, but I don't know if I'd have expected him to carry a team either.

That said, David Newton and Greg Hardy could both learn that a contract isn't earned or lost on a game or two at the end of the year.  This isn't the college bowl season, this is the NFL.

I'm done with Lafell.  He makes the most critical drops when he's wide open.  He isn't quite big enough or fast enough to be good purely on athletic ability, so you have to make up for it with concentration.  He's an awful jump ball receiver.  His cuts aren't sharp at all, he kind of rounds them out.  When he does get a step on a receiver its such a small amount of separation Cam has to rocket it in to him - and he's not good enough to catch those.

All of production comes when his route on a playcall coincides with the soft spot in the zone coverage, or he gets a free step or two when the defense is fooled by misdirection, play action or is too concerned about Olsen or Smith, or the threat of Cam running.

Sure he's a great blocker.  I just don't think its worth it considering we don't have an explosive running game that needs those edges sealed.  Also all of his impactful blocks happen downfield, he often misses his man or makes a poor block on screen plays while they are developing.

My biggest fear of him is if we resign him (even to a very team friendly contract) he'll get a starting nod over potentially impactful receivers simply because he knows the playbook and has a good relationship with Cam.

I wouldn't care if Lafell left. Number 3s are easily replaced. And who cares if he can block. Dwayne Jarret could block.

Right?  The only time blocking as a wide-out is a concern is if you flat out can't block to the point where you are a liability on the field.  Not many guys are like that at the NFL level.  Pretty sure thats the main reason Tavon doesn't see many snaps.

    • He’s the man for 2025 and I hope he can continue to inch forward. There isn’t much on the market for next year. What do you guys bashing Bryce expect us to do? Pay Darnold 25-30mil to come back? Bring in Rush? Would he be any better? Fields could get same type contract Dalton got. We need to get him a quick WR then load up on defense. You can continue to bash Bryce if you want, but there aren’t really better options in the immediate future. And all these 5th yr seniors In the draft are the same age as him.
    • So what is the goal? Let him lead us to mediocrity for 5 yrs?
    • Agreed on Wilson. We need to give up this fetish for Tee Higgins. It ain’t happening for reasons already stated. Our money would be better spent elsewhere.
