Stewart and the playoffs

I'd like to see what Tolbert does with 20 carries a game.

Sent from the Carolina Huddle App

This!  He has had 20+ carries only twice in his entire career even though his body is built for this that kind of workload.   In BOTH of those games he went over 100 yards.  He's great in protection, a great short yardage guy, and for someone as big as he is, he has great hands.  I love D-lo and Stewie, but I just don't see the ability to get the consistent yardage from them anymore, and we complain about that.  In this case, the answer IS on the roster, just give the guy a chance.

As for the original topic of the thread, absolutely bring Stewart in, let him roll as just depth and if something happens to D-lo or Tolbert, you have depth to fill in that knows the roster and can be successful.

Im going to say it again.. The people that are saying if Stew is healthy but needs to stay on the bench because he "may" ruin D Will and Tolberts rhythm.. Please... Jesus. You're half retarded.. If you dont remember.. The man was making quite a few nice plays before that hit took him out.. I say if he's ready let that dude eat! He's exaaactly what we need along with D Will and Tolbert.. Let the man eat. Get off this rhythm crap for the love of god.

They played in 4 games together excluding the NO game Stewart got hurt (his lone carry a 16 yarder)

4 games they played together (Atl, SF, NE, Mia)

Williams - 37 rushes

Stewart - 33 rushes

Rushes over 3 yards?

Williams - 9 rushes over 3 yards (24% of his runs)

Stewart - 19 over 3 yards (57% of his runs)

That is the difference. Stewart consistently gets decent yet unimpressive yards. Williams will occasionally pop the longer ones.

It isn't hate of one player or love of another. Stewart simply consistently gets yards.

In a ball control O.....Stewart is valuable even if not making the highlight reel.

Look at Williams last 2 games as we head into the postseason.

22 rushes attempts - 4 rushes over 3 yards (18%)

Why do people want 28 to stay out?

That isn't bashing Williams. He is a good RB if he can get into space. Our OL accidentally create holes. Our RBs are forced to creates through trash piles and that is more Stewart and Tolberts game. We need to use our RBs effectively. That means if 28 is healthy he takes rush attempts away from Williams. Williams needs an increased workload in our pass attack. He may realistically be one of our best weapons there. He can still have good rush days too (the 2 NY games for example) but we don't need to purely rely on him as he is more dependent on the OL

Yeah at this point, with this line, I wish we would take a page out of the Saints/Patriots/ Ahman Green/Packers playbook and just use screen passes, flares, RB dump offs more than slamming our RBS into a wall over and over.  That would slow down the other teams pass rush which should give Cam more time to throw or run. Turn Cam loose, run/pass options, more hurry up. I know they can't change up the O in 2 weeks but they can focus on the things that have been the most effective and do more of it.

Tolbert and Williams do everything we need. Williams has been the explosive guy at times and helps Cam in the passing game, and Tolbert is the moving the chains, goal line guy.

2012 would've been a better off season if we just signed Tolbert and let Stewart hamstring someone else's cap. Now we've got 2 guys making top money at one position, and of course like any guy Hurney extends, suddenly he can't stay on the field. Doesn't make a lick of sense.

Stewart is also better at pass blocking. Deangelo got blown up more than once last week resulting in Cam being harassed.

Right, so you take touches from one of the only explosive playmakers because he missed a couple of blocks? If you paid close attention, since you were at the game and all, Tolbert missed a couple of blitz plays as well. I guess you forgot to mention that part. Do me a favor and show a still shot of DeAngelo's touchdown run against the Saints before it developed and start a thread asking folks if Barner was the starter what would he have done on that play. See, you like to act all smart and witty. Like to make sarcastic replies when someone post something that is off base a little. Truth is you post some of the most foolish crap as anyone else. With Steve Smith hobbled you want to take away touches from, outside of Ginn, the only guy who can score anywhere on the damn field because of pass protection. He has been solid in that aspect all year... In these last 3 games since #28 got injured #34 has a 70 yard score a 40 yard score and a 50 yard play(which he was stripped). He is the damn key for this team reaching the Super Bowl. Why can t you and everyone else see this. Schula finally realized what people havnt for years. He is a two way player and adds another dimension in the passing game that can exploit teams in the playoffs. But ur so damn bias you rather see a player in there who hasnt scored a td in two years rather than the 2 men who had gotten it done all year long..

I suggest Stewart is better at pass protection than Williams, which he is.

You go off on a Deangelo induced rage and get personal.

Feel better, kid? I'll be sure to let you know when you are important enough for me to have an conversation with. Until then, keep practicing.

You can game plan around either Williams or Stewart and they can both win us games. I would rather leave Williams in because he almost always does better as the feature back. If the Panthers announced Stewart as the feature back that would be fine too.

What I don't have confidence in is Shula's talent at designing a gameplan around a double (triple?) trouble setup. Is he calling plays designed for a certain back or is he calling a play and whichever back is ready goes in.

A DeAngelo induced rage? Have a seat... Nothing was personal about what I said. Now if you took it that way that's on you. Me being any significance in your world doesn't matter to me. You said Cam was hurried cause DeAngelo missed blocks. I pointed out that Tolbert missed blocks as well. Nothing about my post was illogical or ignorance. Now if you don't like me responding to you or bothering you I wont respond to you anymore. If you think I made this personal and you were offended I will not come on your website any longer. Because when you talk about who or what is important, please believe you or this site is not in my world.

We are a ball control O. Like it or not....

Stewart when healthy, fits that better. We need to be able to move the chains and not get behind the chains.

Facts are facts. Stewart is more consistent getting decent gains. In THIS offense, that matters. O is really stalling out of late and our lack of being able to run bc Williams gets the lions share is part of that

Unless Stew's ankles and feet crack off, one day he is going to show you doubters that he is an exceptional feature back in this league, and I hope that day comes in the 2014 playoffs.

Everyone keeps talking about rhythm.  What do you think a healthy 28 is going to do if he could get into a rhythm? He is the combination of D-Will and Tugboat.  For argument's sake, I will concede that he is not the necessarily the home run threat that Williams is, and he does not have quite the power that Tolbert has, but he is still a home run threat with the power to move the ball between the tackles, and is a proficient pass catcher.

Now, I don't like all the pissing-match arguments as to who should play when/how. I will leave that up to the coaches, but I definitely think that if Stewart is healthy, he should be incorporated into the offense on a consistent basis. Moreover, if the business side of the game demands that we have to let either Stew or D-Will go, I am keeping Stew for the reasons I mentioned in the preceding paragraph.

He may realistically be one of our best weapons there. He can still have good rush days too (the 2 NY games for example) but we don't need to purely rely on him as he is more dependent on the OL

4 yards is relatively arbitrary because Stew, over those same spans, had more 0 or negative yard carries as a percentage of his total, 21% compared to 8%(raw numbers: stew - 7, Dwill - 3).  So Stew more often put the offense at a net loss or no gain, though DWill had more 1 yard carries... This is why we can't just look at "number of rushing plays greater than x" and say "so and so is more boom or bust!", as it actually appears, if you look at # of plays that were for *positive* yards, DWill was more dependable than stew at 92% compared to Stew's 79%.  Furthermore, my count is different than yours - I'm getting DWill at 9 running plays of 4 or more yards, and Stew at 14 of 4 or more yards, and while it's true Stew still has more, he also has more negative plays.  So this is more complicated than what it looked like, no?

So I got bored and did an ANOVA on Stew and Dwill's rushing numbers from those four games and found there was no statistical difference between the two of them.  I did an ANOVA principally so I could test for an interaction effect within each game - to see if one or the other of the players was generating more yards in different games - and there was no significant result detected.  If people want to know what exactly an ANOVA does I can explain it, but in brief, it tests to see if there is a difference between groups (in this case the groups are our RBs) in their influence on some variable (in this case yards gained), and it looks not just at averages but also variances. I found no difference between groups.   In other words, the stats indicate we can't support the idea that there's a real difference between these two in output per game.  This could be due to small sample size, but I actually think both RBs are just plain hampered by the OL.  They DO have different running styles, yes, but I think they're both productive, and I think both of them are suffering from terrible blocking.
