2014 UFA WR

In all honesty, there's not much veteran options. Boldin won't be worth what he wants at his age. He'll probably end up back in Arizona or something. Decker would be good, but we need a possession wide receiver, not another slot WR we won't use.

You do realize Boldin said the only team he wanted to play for was the 49ers, or he was gonna retire?

I'd much rather get a vet lineman in FA than take my chances in the draft. It sounds kind of counter-intuitive when I say it, but I kind of feel that a rookie lineman has a steeper learning curve than a WR in reference to making the quicker impact at the pro level. Or, maybe it's just that rookie receivers' feats are more publicized.

Now it doesn't mean much now with a new front office but we've done much better drafting linemen early in the draft than we have at WR's. I like the vet skill players better than the boom or bust prospect with the rookies.

We haven't drafted a WR early in the draft in a while.  2007 with Jarrett was the last one I thing.  Before that, Keary Colbert in 2004.  So the sample size isn't that great.   I felt like during those years we were more concerned about a receivers ability to block downfield for the run game than about getting somebody with speed and good hands.

If memory serves, we have only used 2 first round picks in our entire history on WR's (Moose and the one whose name we do not utter).   That is part of the reason we have such a deficit at receiver.  We have to make a big splash at WR in this offseason, either through free agency or the draft.  We are at a point were we don't have much choice in the matter.

Would LOVE to have Decker, but he's probably getting big money from someone.  Nicks is starting to seem pretty realistic.  His best bet to land a big deal is to sign a one year "prove it" deal and show that he can stay healthy and get back to his former production.  What better place to do it than back home with a young Pro Bowl QB where you'd be the #1 WR the minute you signed?

Aside from Smitty and Olson, we have no one we can count on to reliably make even the easy catches. Unfortunately, even Smitty is starting to drop some gimmes. Hakeem Nicks, if he is available and he is cheap, would be a huge difference-maker for this team. We don't need a burner. We need a solid possession receiver we can count on to make the 5-15 yard plays and draw attention away from Smitty and Olson. Nicks could fill that void.

Of course, if there's a team out there that will give him $4 million plus, we can't match that. We can find someone cheaper or try to find a guy in the early rounds of the draft. Evans from TAMU didn't do himself any favors against Duke. He may have cost himself a round or two. Maybe that's our man.

Must let lafell walk, and depending on what position there looking to draft should determine who we pursue.

If were drafting a wr it might be best to keep hixion, mcnutt, ginn, and King and sign back guys like mitchell, hardy if possible, cole, munnerlyn, and other core guys

if not then we should only retain ginn and sign one of these vets or a risk/reward type guys(britt, maclin), whoever we sign has to be a guy who brings it every game and not go Houdini like lafell has

We need guys that can get in the endzone. I don't care if it's a WR or TE, we simply do not have guys who are threats in the redzone. If I had it my way, we would pick up a TE, preferably in the draft, and get a possession WR in free agency. Two TE sets give the offense an amazing amount of flexibility, including balance in both the passing and running game.

Just as many olineman are busts as WR's in the draft... Gosder Cherilous, Otah, that OT from the Rams, Oher possibly. It happens at all  positions. I have trust in Gettleman to find us the right guy. 1 elite WR will make all of our other WR's better, Steve included.  We haven't used a 1st rd pick on a WR since the 90's. I would get at least 1 with a high draft pick and also bring in a later pick/good midlevel FA if possible. Same thing with oline. The offense in general has to be the focal point of the offseason.
