Officially Concerned about the Offense

In the 2nd quarter, Newton went 7/12 (or 6/11) with Hixon causing an INT, LaFell dropping an easy one, DWill fumbling away a redzone possession and McNutt mis-playing a beauty in the endzone.  He also ran for 45 yards.

Play-by-play for the second quarter

Also, the moment we dedicate even half the resources towards offense that we have towards the defense, we can start demanding the offense carry us. Until then, as we're a defensive team, the defense damn well better be "saving our butts".

...Cam also accounted for like, what, 70 yards on the TD drive?  Meh.

Agree with the last comment in general.  However, not the resources--Olsen, Gross, Kalil, Smiith, Cam, Stew and DWill--more that the defense makes.

The Hixon pass was high and hot.  Having played WR/TE in college, I can tell you that the slant is not supposed to be thrown high.  Still, Hixon could have caught it.

Your first paragraph illustrates my point. We can find patches where Cam is awesome.  However, in the second quarter at one point, about 30% of the game behind us, he had completed 1 pass and missed on 8.  We cannot have that and win in the playoffs.  All I am saying.

I get the feeling I am talking game film and others are talking highlight reels.

Do you have access to the first quarter play-by-play?  DWill had about 65 yards on one play and Cam threw for 149.  I hope everyone here does not find that acceptable as we enter the playoffs.

Boy you sure changed the subject quick when your idiotic statement was highlighted.

Changed the subject?  Here are the facts--

Take away the SCREEN pass to DWill and Cam threw for under 100 yards.

At one point In the second quarter, Cam had a ZERO passer rating.

Time of possession--we used to own it, but lately we are losing the battle.

I cannot make this more ON TOPIC.

We need to get better on offense--Cam does too.  Idiotic statement?  At least I state facts?  Moron.

Not much talent at the WR position or the RH side of the Oline exacerbated with Cam's tendency to be a little wild high lately early.

Would love to see more short passes and screens but does Shula think the Oline isn't talented enough for effective screens or Cam's touch is off too much?

I hope we can get some of this working to slow down the pass rush as well.

Meanwhile we'll continue to lean on our tenacious D and hope they can give our O some good field position or even put points on the board.

More fodder, Mcnutt's almost TD catch sure was a double take, it was strange to see a Panther WR seemingly so effortlessly pull in a pass over the defender. At least when 89 wasn't in the frame.

Everyone on the team has things to improve on but you are zeroing in on Cam... for why?  With smitty out, if people cover Olsen well we are in trouble.

I only read the first couple pages so it may have been pointed out but compared to last season the offense performed about the same or better in:

(last year's numbers in parenthesis)

points per game- 22.9 (22.3)

3rd down %- 44 (43)

4th down %- 77 (33)

penalties- 80 (98)

time of possession per game- 31:54 (29:51)

completion %- 61.7 (58)

passing TDs- 24 (19)

INTs- 13 (12)

passing 1st down %- 35.7 (34.9)

rushing yards per game- 126.6 (130.5)

rushing 1st down %- 25.3 (26.6)

Rushing TDs dropped from 21 to 14, passing yards per game dropped from 230.2 to 190.2 and long passes and rushes (20+ and 40+) both suffered significant drop offs. So last year's offense was better at getting huge plays and that's pretty much it. Not saying the offense is good or bad, but considering a lot of people expected Shula to run a terrible offense I would say he did a decent job when comparing it to last season.

Matters of the fact:

1. We need a new receiving corps, I want to see what McNutt can do but we need Moncrief and Matthews asap

2. O-line has to keep the pocket clean, way too much penetration from all sides

3. Cam is gonna have to hit wrs in the breadbasket in order to do work, Accuracy is something he will improve on. Our receivers are too shitty (besides smitty) to make a play on the ball, you gotta make it real easy for them

4. No excuse not to win the Superbowl this year if Shula and Dorsey are worth their money

You can't really blame that on McNutt (that's a stretch), not to say that the blame is on Cam either. it was just "close, but no cigar".

Rivera called the overthrows "unforced errors."  Cam said he needs to get better and get back to his mechanics.  Smith went to Cam on the sideline to get his head right.  Who else should share the blame?

Questions: Do you think Cam can overthrow WRs all the way to the Super Bowl?  Do you want him to continue overthrowing WRs and TEs and RBs?  If you answered "no" to these questions, then we are in agreement and doing so without "zeroing in" on the QB--simply suggesting that he corrects this problem.

To think Cam overthrows balls like ALL the other QBs but to him doing so gives his haters something to latch unto to and intentionally use to take attention away from his real contribution to this team. The HATERS zero in on such things and act like him overthrowing a couple of balls like Peyton Manning is the end of the world. BTW, I will take Cam's so call OVER THROWN BALLS over ELI Mannings any day. Take that from a diehard Giants fan.

Some of you Panthers fans have some seriously DEEP issued. The treatment of Cam reminds me of his time at Auburn. Those Bama fans were Psychos. Their hate for Cam would make them post any dumb ish. It seem some of those fans are also Panthers fans.

Telling the truth is not criticism, it is reality.  Cam was 1 for 8 with a ZERO QB rating in the second quarter.  How many playoff games does that win in your world?

Cam needs to play like he is capable of playing all 4 quarters and stop counting on the defense to hold down the fort until he gets it worked out. When Cam figured it out vs the Saints and rallied for the win, we had run 44 plays vs. the Saints 81.  You don't win games that way too often.  22 minutes of possession vs. the Saints' 38 minutes.  That is not getting it done--our D saved our butts, but those who only see the scoreboard think there is no room for growth.  We need our offense and its QB to bring it for 4 quarters, not 4 drives.

Lately, we are not dominating the time of possession.  We have not for 5 weeks in a row, and we were leading the NFL in that stat before the Dolphins game.   I assure you that the Panthers are concerned about this and are working to improve it.

Since your such an expert on how Cam should play, if you don't want him because he's not good enough for this sensational team, I am sure there are other teams who won't find much wrong with him overthrowing a couple of balls if it means helping their team win.

Sad, that you hate this kid so much you would be palying the same, I will sit and pick out every ish Cam does and act like it really is HURTING the team. Your ego is seriously that big?! I hope you keep picking apart every ish Cam does and he continues to use it as fuel to Piss ur ass off.

Actually yes.  I think we can win the Superbowl with how well Cam is playing.  He is already playing very well.  We do not need him to play perfect to win playoff games, despite what some people think, but we DO need Lafell to step up his game

I am not buying the whole we dont have the players to have a good offense.

If the Dook Blue Devils can score about 50 points with a bunch of 2-3 star scrubs than there is no reason the Panthers can't have atleast a respectable offense.

Scheme plays a huge role in football. If you watched that Dook A&M game you would have seen a ton of quick passes, slants, curls, screens, etc.

Shula needs to go back to being the QB coach next season and we need to get a proven OC in here. Someone like Turner.
