Officially Concerned about the Offense

I don't think you are getting an accurate Panther fan assessment from this board. 

Personally, I am very happy with Newton so far.  Of course, that doesn't mean I won't criticize him if I think he is screwing up.  He gets the same treatment as any other player.  But he gets a lot more attention than most other players.  That goes with being the qb. 

 

the reality is though, and I don't mean to claim you are an example of this, there are a lot of posters that like to say things like "...I love him but I'll still point out what he's doing wrong" that really make posts that sound like, "I love him but I will never, ever be happy with how he plays in a season."  Most of us get crazy during gameday threads, me especially - and I demand perfection and bitch after every play - but it is more and more obvious to me that some people want Cam to be at a level of perfection that is very, very unrealistic for where we are right now.

 

all that said I think there are only a few posters on this board that truly would get rid of Cam if they had that choice. Most, even those that complain, still realize how good he is.

Sorry about your year this year.  Hope next year goes better... You guys seem to have the nicest fans, hah.  Minnesota ftw.  I didn't watch the Vikes hardly at all this year.  How much of the season was on Frazier?  How do you feel about him getting let go?

Yep, him and Smitty are the only two options we had that were consistently worth a crap.  Depending on what day it is LaFell just completely decides to take the day off.

 

Ginn is doing a lot more than I think we realize, but he is also being severely underutlized by Shula imo.  He's a good #3 receiver, and I'd keep him over Lafell any day, though I don't think it'll be a decision between the two (and Ginn has given us tremendous field position and may be the reason we beat SF, actually).

I have to admit that during Sunday's game when Newton overthrew 6-7 consecutive passes, I was thinking dam dude, take a zanex.  :)

 

If you think about it though, all players get some criticism.  Steve Smith gets criticized for picking fights, Hardy got some early in the season for not getting sacks, Luke gets slammed by some for his pass coverage.  The secondary gets slammed when they make one or two mistakes even if they have shut the other team down for most of the game.   A couple of people criticized Johnson early in the game yesterday.  

 

From what I have seen, its that way on all boards. I imagine even Brady and Manning get some criticism. 

 

The only Carolina player who hasn't been criticized (to my knowledge) is Ryan Kalil, and that is because people don't care that much about the center unless he screws up and snaps the ball over the head of the qb, and fortunately Kalil hasn't done that this year.

But yeah, we all get annoyed on gameday.  We're not coaches for a reason.  I don't think that's a big deal, and Cam DID settle down, and had a pretty awesome day after the first quarter.

It seems most Panthers  fans on this board do not really care for Cam Newton as a quarterback. As a Viking fan living in Charlotte how would you all feel about a trade for a first round pick ? Do you think the Panthers would consider trading Newton before his rookie contract is up ? I think a trade like this would be great for both sides. The Panthers have a great defense and really could put anyone in at quarterback and the Vikings with AP and Cam would be deadly.

I don't think that most Panther fans on this board don't care for Cam. I think that being the number 1 player in the draft and then doing well so fast, expectations were through the roof. Then the wins didn't come and people are disappointed that we have 2 losing seasons before this one.  I think they like most people have expected too much too soon.  I think he is just starting to really get it and expect him to get only better.  Now he is playing well by making those around him better rather than trying to do it all himself.

The offense scoring 14 points against the 27th ranked defense in the league who was also missing key defensive starters is an awfully bad omen.

 

Deangelo running for 3.3 yards per carry against the leagues 31st ranked rushing defense is pretty bad.

 

For a ground based methodical offense to lose the time of possession battle by nearly 10 minutes is scary.

 

If not for Cam's legs and ability to make clutch plays this offense would be absolutely horrendous.

 

Top issues with the offense in no particular order:

 

- Lafell's inconsistency

- Byron Bell (self explanatory)

- Lack of sharp, quick passing plays and hot routes.

 

- Cam overthrowing open receivers and thus killing drives.

I think Leslie is more of a coordinator than a Head coach. He was too nice of a guy and the players did not fear him. Rick Spielman also deserves some blame. We have pretty good talent on offense (Except Quarterback) but the defense has been allowed to get old and slim on talent. The team actually played tough the later in the season.

I think you are misremembering.  Although I think people hated Fox and Hurney then more than Jimmy. 

 

I went to the Saints board after our game with them, and there was a thread about Brees being on the decline.  A top 5 qb who threw for 5000 yards this year on the decline.  IMO, its the nature of the beast.

There was, but there were dozens of people calling the OP an idiot, whereas we have "legitimate" discussions weekly in numerous threads about Cam.  I think it's worse here than elsewhere.  I honestly believe a lot of people are struggling with success as a fan base here, and a small minority are also racist dickheads, but most of them are gone now that Cam is silencing critics in every way he can.

 

As to misremembering, it's possible.  Thankfully, Cam has replaced almost all of those memories for me.

offense is fine bench lafell and it will be even better and i think people don't put in prospective that the falcons played hard, they had a stacked box most of the game and there a division rival.

We need 4 quarters from him in the playoffs--he has not been good for the entire game in a month.  Half of his passing yards came on the screen pass that DWill ran and fumbled.  Ginn + Hixon = 22 yards.  Olsen is not a primary, but he was Sunday.  We were not good enough to beat most NFL teams Sunday.

 

Remember that the defense scored a TD, so we scored 14 against one of the worst defenses in football.  Overthrows have been a problem for a long time--time to work that out and move on.  He is making progress, but I have never seen a QB that far off for so many passes without adjusting. 

 

We need Cam to be special--without him, we are dead in the water.

I think mostly execution.  There were some strange plays called for sure but LaFell dropped passes he should be catching.  Were they simple catches?, not really but they were catchable balls.   You aren't paid only to catch the easy one but the hard ones too.  And blatant drops.   Cam's high throws cost us a couple of easy completions.  I remember one sailed 5 feet over a wide open Olsen. 

 

Cam needs to calm down from the first quarter not half way through the second quarter.    He seemed to settle down after Melvin White change the game.

 

It will be interesting to see who we have coming to our house in 12 days.
