Panthers likely to begin contract discussions with Cam this Offseason

Cam over 100 is a bad move. No super bowls and little playoff experience, we better use that as leverage. I have no doubt he'll be worth more, but that's just so much money, ugh.  We need a larger cap. I wish he'd take the Tom Greaty route and take a discount for the better of the team.

If he wants it, he'll get it.

Do you think the Panthers are prepared to watch him walk out the door? Or that another team wouldn't be prepared to pay it if the Panthers aren't?

The ONLY factor holding Cam back from making that much is himself (i.e. what others have noted, he's prepared to take a home-town discount to help build a better team).

P.S The idiot exec who compared Cam's leverage or skill level to a Matt Schaub contract? Well, the NFL is still full of idiots. All you have to do is look around at some of the teams in the league to prove that.

If Cam demands $20+m per year.....yes I think the Panthers would let him walk right now.

Cam holds 100% of leverage on us.  Since drafting him can you name one legitimate acquisition on offense we've made outside of Greg Olsen?  Sure we've landed a few role players who can do their job (ginn can take the top off the defense, wharton has played pretty well, hixon caught a clutch td, tolbert shows flashes but isn't used often for some reason), but we haven't gotten anyone who will go above and beyond expectations.  The only legitimate argument to this statement MIGHT be Amini.  He was having a hell of a season before he went down, obviously the jury is out on him.

We have a rotten Oline, a pair of overpaid and washed up runningbacks (though I think if the oline was fixed deangelo would still be threatening) and not a single receiver that is considered irreplaceable.  Factor in Cam's age, potential, freak athletic ability, lack of injury history, low turnover %, CLUTCH PLAY, and marketing appeal... Cam can get what he asks for whether that be from us or someone else.

Luckily, I really don't see Cam to the type of guy to demand an outrageous contract and would prefer to go down in history as one of the greats.  I really think he will surprise us with his contract so we can build the proper offense around him that HE NEEDS to consistently succeed.  He knows there's something special here in Carolina, he knows he's got a defense he can lean on when things aren't going the way we want them to, and I think he knows he's got a coach and a GM that can turn this team into a dynasty once Hurney's shitty contracts have been cleaned up.

Couldn't have said it better myself (though I did say something similar).

Some folks, just don't get it, understand (his actual market value, potential, with or with out the Panthers).

Dwill (and Stew assuming he can stay on the field and that his injury hasn't crippled him) could both be good if given a semi-decent OL.  We have a very good TE.  We're awful at a couple positions on the OL and weak at WR.  But, the team built a huge defense.  I think Gettles can say to Cam, "This offseason, it's the offense's turn," and have some clout there.

But nothing we say or do means we have leverage over Cam talking little/no money.

If he takes a discount, it'll be because HE wants to... not because he owes it to us, or we have something over him.

You really think Richardson is going to be held hostage by Cam? He will pay him what he wants but he won't let Cam break it off into him. Now with that said I think both sides will come to a agreement that they both like. Also Cams contract still has 1 year and a team option for another. So they don't have to give him a new deal yet. But it would do both sides good to tear his old contract up.

In short, this franchise and fanbase gives Cam no reason to be loyal to them. Cam reminds me of the Eagles with McNabb a few years back. They ran the guy like a horse and only gave him some skinny dude named Pinkston as a receiver. And for the one year they got him a franchise WR(Terrel Owens) they went to a superbowl. With better management the eagles could have had multiple super bowls during McNabb's tenure. I hope Cam is smart and informed enough not to allow that to happen to him. This team could easily be a super bowl favorite for the next 3-4 years with a franchise QB and Cam should demand it because he sign any long term contract. He should put pressure on management to do their job.

I realized this team could have easily been in the play-offs for the last three seasons if the defense hadn't squandered away a few games.

We all understand the cap is a concern (unlike many of franchises because we've been in cap hell for so long).  The truth is the business aspect of the NFL is just as important as success.  Look at the Jets.  I live in New York.  Even during the offseasons of the Giants winning their recent superbowls, the Jets completely dominate headlines despite how poor of an organization they are.

I haven't been to BOA in a long long time, but by all accounts on this forum the culture has pulled a complete 180.  Went from being a wine and cheeser stadium that golf claps and makes passionate fans sit down to a stadium that can be registered on the Richter scale during game winning drives.  You don't think Cam has had anything to do with it?  The guy probably brings in more than 30 mil a year just based on ticket and jersey sales alone.

Yea a contract like that in the Panthers organization would completely cripple the team... but a team with a gaping amount of cap space is currently furiously masturbating at the thought of Cam being brought in.  Everyone hated on Alex Rodriguez for a multitude of reasons as a Yankee, but primarily because of how much he was being paid.  Despite the absolutely ridiculous amount he was earning, he was single-handedly worth more than that for reasons outside his play.

Fact is, based on marketing appeal alone, Cam is the most valuable player in the NFL.  Winning, losing, successful or not, Cam will become the face of the NFL.  He is the revolutionary player that Mike Vick was supposed to be.  Is he an elite QB right now?  Thats debatable, I'd lean toward "almost".  We need to hope that Cam truly loves this organization and fanbase simply because he reeks of special.
