Happy Median - Talking Offense

In 2011 we were top 5, 2012 we finished strong offensively and barely missed top 10.  Now were are near the bottom offensively.

 

Stats aren't always what they appear to be.  I get that.  Especially since we are ball control more than before so we have less opportunities therefore smaller number.  I GOT IT.

 

Haven't some of you thought as I have.  We should be killing them "running or passing" yet we seem so lethargic at times.

 

There has to be a point somewhere in our offense where we can be better.   Shula has done a good job and I think with a couple more offensive weapons he might be able to do more but I am not totally convinced that is the issue. We have had similar players on offense and lite up the scoreboard. 

 

I remember when we signed Ginn the statement regarding Ginn was "Takes the Cover off the defense"  How often have we told Ginn to go and thrown it to him?  Complete or not.   We aren't making teams respect that ability.  Smitty in his prime was outstanding at it.  Great vertical and tenacity to make that big play.  Ginn isn't as physical but has better speed. As as long as Cam doesn't under throw him and get picked off (which he has done a few times) the play is positive whether it is caught or not.  It forces that defense to back up a step or two because of that ability.

 

Teams are taking advantage of the "New Cam Newton" the QB that is taking what is available to him.  Give him the short pass and make sure you tackle. 

 

I would like to see just a TAD bit of the old Chudz offense that threw it down field.   Fugged the read option but some stretching of the field would help loosen up those defenses that should struggle against our team.

We are 7th in points per possession so the offense is doing fine. We're not struggling to score, we are struggling to make big plays but that is as much by design as anything. I don't know why everybody is getting so worked up over the offense, we are winning, not only against the bad teams but the good teams, what more do you want?

We have had several games where the defense has held us up. Thank god.   I think we do, at times, struggle.  When you go three and out 3 or 4 times in a half.  YOU ARE STRUGGLING.

 

I am as happy as anybody that we are winning but if you think we are going into the playoffs and win like we did against New Orleans you are asking a lot.,   Defense is awesome and will help us stay in games but we need to open it up some and not continually take what they want to give us.    The New Orleans game the Jets game they were doing pretty much the same thing.   We were fortunate to win against N.O. and the defense sealed the deal against the Jets not the offense. If we let the defense dictate to us how we are going to play offense we will be one and done, 

 

The NOTHING LONG and good tackling will bet us if we don't try to open the field up some..

My opinion is that

1. The offensive line has gotten progressively worst over the last 2 years. Probably could stop here and not go any further.  Our left side is good. Our center is good. Our RG and RT are border line horrible.

 

2. We are actually scoring more per game than last year.  So greater TOP. Less touches and more points.  We are a much more efficient offense.

 

3. I would take 2011 Receiving core over 2013 Receiving core

• Jeremy Shockey
• Greg Olsen
• Lafell
• Legetheballdrop Naanee

4. We are averaging almost 30 less yards per game running the ball.  Which goes back to number 1 our OL sucks.

Which obviously affects the passing game more.  Hopefully we address OT and getting our injured interior linemen will help.

 

Like I said in the OP, I don't think we try and stretch the field any.  If you don't throw the bomb every now and then.  Teams won't respect you.  If you throw it, they damn sure don't want that big play over the top.. So they back up a step or two.  That softens things up for other plays.  Passing and running.

 

I don't think we use enough downfield offense to force teams to respect it.

Shula just foolin' everybody.  He's bout to unleash the dragon, "fug it I'm goin' deep YOLO!" every play of the playoffs.  Catch teams off guard and they won't know what hit 'em.

We underperformed on offense in many key areas, namely 3rd down conversions. We were absolutely horrible on 3rd down. Cam got sacked 3 or 4 times. He held onto the ball too long and never really did break contain and get out into the open field. Receivers dropped balls. Smitty was out (still is). Yet Cam and the boys somehow still managed to win the game.

This offense overall has been a very efficient scoring machine this season. They have certainly looked like they were struggling for the last 3 weeks. This Atlanta game should be very telling. We will see how Shula game plans without Smitty. We will see if Hixon could be a keeper at WR. We will see if Cam can resume his excellent form from the winning streak.

We will see if this defense can handle the once elite passing attack of the Falcons. Is the D line still firing on all cylinders?

There is a lot on the line. In my view we really do need to get that #2 seed because if we have to play SF or NO that game needs to be in Charlotte. Getting the #1 seed would be amazing but a lot needs to happen. Not having to go up to Seattle for the NFC crown would be such a bonus. But let's not get ahead of ourselves...

I think this team will be focused on both sides of the ball.

We still need top receiving talent just as much as OL, OL have nothing to do with DBs blanketing our receivers. And lets be perfectly honest Cam is never gonna have all day in the pocket other teams do have DL talent just like us and they will get pressure. There is maybe and handful of really good O lines in the league right now and everybody else is average. Pass rushers in the league today are just on another level, they are overwhelming offensive line talent right now. The Niners have arguably the best O line in the league and we destroyed them, they didnt really get back on track until they got their passing game going, they have been able to run the ball all season but they were still struggling without a passing game.  If we choose to address O line first i wont be upset but i still think we need elite talent at receiver just as much and im not talking about just depth guys. We just simply have nobody for teams to game plan for and it just as important as our other struggles.

Shore up a quality trap blocking line first.............remember DW's touchdown run last week?

 

You get a line that can trap block for a strong running game (any running back can gain yards with a hole into the secondary) and then your DB's cannot blanket receivers.......they have to play zone on the run.

 

At that point a strong O line opening up the running game..........then opens up the passing game.

 

You don't need elite receivers when the DB can't afford to blanket them because of running backs zipping all over the secondary force them off those receivers.

 

Football fans love the passing skill position shows the NFL puts on......but the foundation for success with any offense is in the trench.

 

A dominant O line trap blocking unit will compromise the coverage of any defense no matter how elite their DBs are........

Are you seriously sitting there saying Peyton Manny throws everyone of his balls perfectly to his Receivers? Those guys get paid to CATCH THE BALL. Cam is no more inaccurate with the ball than any of the Vets. That to is a myth. Also, if Cam holding unto the ball is the reason why he's getting sacked so much, then those other QBs, including the Peytons and Bradys, would never hold up behind this team's OL. They seem to enjoy holding unto the ball for as long as they can to make a play.

It's funny you say that: Cause I would like to think that the Panthers will try to throw downfield more often in the playoffs (either off a well designed or trick play). They might as well, waiting so long (minus the drops from Ginn, Lafell and the rest of them).

I don't think he was blaming Cam for receivers dropping balls. I think that was part of the aborted "offense" he was discussing for that ONE game. I don't think he was 'blaming' Cam or anyone else either. He was just raising the questions for thread. It was OK (whether you agree with everything he said or not). 

 

Personally, I won't judge the Panther offense, till after they play the Dirty Birds. A lot of playoff caliber teams have been struggling the past few weeks. So the Panthers aren't the only one (teams are playing harder now/for jobs, even the scrubs).

 

Let's see how they do at the precipice of, or in the playoffs?
