Huddle question.....running a four WR formation on occasion

I keep wondering if we are using these pointless 2 yd. losses to set up someone at the right time.  Then I remember who our OC is.

to be fair the wildcat has never lost us yards, let alone 2 - but it does seem to kill momentum.  course that's a subjective assessment.

Ginn - Olsen - LaFell - Hixon and a single back to pass block and keep a LB home could have some teeth to it if we can give Cam time and they get open. I'm all for anything moves the ball and scores points.

Hrmm were we running that set on the last drive vs NO?

What is the most it has gained?

8 yards once early in the season.

It seems that lately it has been much less productive than it was early.

It also almost never accounts for more ypc in a given game than what we'd have than Williams' YPC for that game.

Gotta wonder why Shula loves it some much if that is the best we can get out of it.

The coaches' insistence on running a basic Wildcat is really baffling to me when there is so much crap you try from it... and don't say it's a Shula thing because Chud never tried anything either. We've been setting up that fake wildcat for three years now and all we've gotten is one screen pass to Cam (2011) and a fake wildcat to Smitty (last week). We need to try and innovate with that set... get Cam out wide, bring him back in, and then set up some Cam-Ginn-Dwil double reverse or something. I mean, you're not going to see DeAngelo throwing the ball so why act like it's going to happen?

As for the set, I have no problem with it but the problem is we either lose Olsen or D-Wil/Tolbert in a four-wide set. I very highly doubt it's worth taking them out to give McNutt or King a shot IMO unless it's the last play before half or something.

well that screen pass to Cam wasn't a wildcat play - it was a bunch formation to the right with Cam under center. It was a fake WR screen to Legadu (who played QB at Boise State) via a backwards pass. Legs then threw a screen pass to Cam on the left side. It was a beautiful play and would have been a TD if it didn't take so long to develop.

As for the wildcat, Shula seems to run it in the redzone. That's what I hate. If we're going to run it, run it between the forties where there's actually a chance that something besides a run to a DT to happen. I mean seriously... who thinks a HB will throw a pass in the redzone? Now if it were Armanti or Legadu, there's a chance of a pass... with DWill, he's running off tackle to the right.

You're right, my bad.

Some running backs have been known to throw in the red zone, like LaDainian Tomlinson. The problem is DeAngelo Williams is not LaDanian Tomlinson, and simply isn't going to be expected to have a shot to throw. They need to set up plays that are tricky but doable, like bringing Cam around to take a pitch and then having him either run with it, throw it, or lateral it to Ted Ginn. These are easy, easy ideas that don't seem to be even considered... I applaud Shula for actually doing something inventive with the Wildcat (the fake wildcat pass was brilliant IMO), but I want to see more of it. I mean, it's not like our WRs are terrible on reverse plays... each and every one of them has had success running the ball. Give them a shot in the wildcat and make the defense think, don't just run up the middle.
