Dorsey's dropping the ball as QB Coach.

Cam's biggest improvement , by far, has been on the mental side. Dorsey, Shula and especially D Anderson sheparded Cam ( with a ton on hard work) fron an athelete playing QB to a QB who is highly atheltic. Last year he was lucky to get to his second read before getting antsy in the pocket. Yesterday, he stood tall, recognized what defense he was seeing and made the right throws. You could have been looking at Brady/Manning on the final TD drive. On the TD itself, his on field comments after the game was amazing. "I saw the blitz coming, recognized it was cover zero and went to my hot read." That would have NEVER been his response last year even if he made the same throw.

If you had posted this a tad earlier, I could have just agreed with you instead of putting up my own account.

His accuracy on short and intermediate passes has improved, but he has definitely had a poor year throwing downfield. If he gets that back to where he was his first two years, he'll be lethal.

 

I worry that the big Superbowl ring he'll have on his hand after the season will negatively impact his throwing mechanics though.  :D

 

What the fug? Lack of downfield throws have more to do with us having 6 offensive linemen on IR and one legitimate down field threat in Greg Olsen. Yeah Ginn keeps safetys honest but he isn't going to catch a ball over a safety and CB like a megatron.

It's not a knock on how good he is.

John Elway was a gunslinger too. He was never as pinpoint accurate as, say, Dan Marino. But if I had to pick one to be my Super Bowl starter, I'd take Always.

Likewise, in the 70s you had Terry Bradshaw the gunslinger vs a better passer in Roger Staubach, but it was Bradshaw who walked away with more rings.

I've got no issue with that style of play, and it doesn't mean he can't improve (Lord knows Favre did). All it means is you coach him appropriately, same as you would any other QB.

 

I really think there is not a line between "gunslinger" and "not." I would, for instance, call Marino a gunslinger based on the risks he took.

 

I didn't watch football before the early 90s so I'm not going to comment on the play of players before that, but Marino was most definitely a gunslinger by my own definition of one when I was watching him play.

 

Plus Elway was goddamn accurate, and once he got weapons and had a good team around him, he took far fewer risks - because he didn't need to.

If you want to believe Cam will never have the accuracy of Peyton Manning, that's fine - but don't couch that opinion as "that's because he's a Favre Gunslinger!", because there aren't Favre Gunslingers or Manning Accurate Passers...

 

Plus how you can look at a guy 3 years in and decide his accuracy is never going to be elite is beyond me...

You just described Brett Favre.

Favre was thoroughly capable of throwing hyperaccurate passes that made everyone go 'holy cow'. He was also known for having at least two or three passes a game that made everyone go 'holy s--t' :blink:

And yeah, that's Newton too.

That's just what a gunslinger QB does, and to be honest, I don't really see a problem with it.

You can win championahips with that sort of QB, but the secret is to coach him based on what he is, not try to make him into something else.

Favre is hardly the only quarterback to have inconsistent accuracy early in his career. I also don't recall him ever rushing for 500+ yards in a season before either. If we're going to try and shoehorn Cam into the mold of 90's era quarterbacks, I think Favre is the last guy on the list.

Now if you want to talk about Steve Young, one could make a case for that.

Hey. Maybe its the waves of defenders bolting at him that screws up his mechanics. Any quarterback in the league suffers poor fundamentals when they have to evade defenders. Get cam a clean pocket and the man is just fine.

Marino was much more of a gunslinger than even Favre and had a career completion pct shy of 60%.
