Gantt: Payton outsmarted himself

payton's biggest mistake was duplicating the same error he did against the patriots...going 3 and out because of soft playcalling and leaving too much time on the clock for newton and company

granted, the panthers offense had done next to zilch the entire game, but the saints should have put forth a much better effort to get a first down than running up the gut 3x.

Great post.  As a Saints fan -  I could not agree more.  There is no doubt that Carolina deserved to win - your defense was epic, very impressed.  However, with the lead - do not know why Payton would not try a slant, back shoulder, anything - one first down and game was over - never getting it running into the line three times.  Obviously, your defense got into Payton's head and made him doubt himself.  You all deserved the game, and it was a great game - I hope maybe, we get to have round three in the playoffs - assuming the Saints still make the playoffs that is.

Payton was extremely arrogant in the way he coached. He started a 3rd round rookie at Left Tackle vs. a Pro Bowl talent. His QB got sacked 5 times in the first half and he stuck with it. Why? Because he's Sean Payton, god of offense, he doesn't admit mistakes.

The entire screen game was a little absurd. When you throw screens to the running backs it's a challenge to the Linebackers and their ability to react. That is basically attacking our strength and it failed miserably. If they wanted to attack our weakness they should have found Colston down field, which they had trouble doing because a guy worse than Byron Bell was starting for them.

The one thing I semi agree with is punting it back to the panthers with a minute left. They could have thrown for it and maybe they get it, but at that point in the game our defense looked more likely to score than our offense. Cam was hurt and wildly inaccurate. Nobody expected Cam to deliver like that.

In all honesty, the fake FG was dumb, but not for the same reasons that have been stated...

I remember thinking during Graham's time here that he had a pretty weak leg. So when they came out with the FG unit, I was surprised if they would've actually attempted the FG b/c it was ~52 yards IIRC. So, the reason it was dumb to me was to bring out that personnel to begin with. He should've either kept the offense out and went for it since he wanted to be that faux-ballsy anyway, or you punt it and play field position.

Contrasting that decision with his decision to run three times and punt on their second to last drive is truly mind boggling.

I said it in another thread: Payton's biggest mistake was hubris.

He didn't think that Cam could get it done...at home...with the NFC South at stake...without Steve Smith.  He was wrong. If you have Brees, you have to try and pick up that first down and end the game. Period.

I think this is correct. All the pre-game reports suggested that Graham was struggling in warm-ups. So given that and the weather conditions, I don't think the Saints trusted him to make that kick. But in that case, just leave Brees out there and run an actual play.

Thanks. But, LOL, I just realized the new system update on my phone auto-corrected Graham into Grandma.

That's not arrogance that is desperation and fear. They had to attempt trick plays because it was the only way they could possibly generate the points they are used to getting.

PFT: Sean Payton outsmarts himself on left tackle decision

I'd agree, but I think he missed an additional example.

The decision to get cute and go for a fake field goal turned out to be a pretty bad one too. Had they pocketed three points there, they'd have only needed a field goal on the final drive.

The inside and trick FG play IMO showed Payton didn't believe they could beat us straight up outdoors
