Question to Huddle....do we franchise tag Hardy if we cannot come to terms?

The man is a beast and his presence on this defense is dynamic. I have posted before that we will probably lose him due to money concerns, but Just watching him play both inside and outside and dominate most games...is undeniable. Cam has another year before his contract has to be worked out so here is my question.Hardy to be a franchised tag player if we cannot come to terms with him (that's 12 million a year don't forget, maybe a cap killer?) Is he worth that amount for this team...can we sign him at 10 to 10.5 million a year with a lot of front loaded money and avoid the tag? Can DG work another trick to get this done without killing the cap? Opinions and ideas please.

Not if you want to keep him beyond the tag year. Putting the tag on someone in today's NFL seems to do nothing but piss off the player. Aside from the fact it does count against the cap as bleys mentioned, it also indicates a huge gap between both negotiating parties which usually doesn't end well.

I think Gettleman can make this thing work and we'll have Hardy next season. For some reason I'm not really concerned about it. I'm more worried about the O-line, DBs, WRs and a running back by the name of Jonathon Stewart.

Some key players that are FAs after this season's Superbowl win (gotta be optimistic at this point... we'll be #2 seed and Seattle is clearly beatable at home):

Gross

Wharton

Mikell

Mitchell

Captain

Senn

Cole

Gano

Olsen

Lafell

Those are the biggest FAs in my opinion but there are a half dozen others.  Its unlikely we'd be able to resign everyone or that we even need to resign some of them (i.e. Lafell, imo).  If you throw in a Hardy signing, then that list looks like we'll be cutting a lot of current players.

Perhaps this is Gross' last year, maybe we don't resign Captain, forcing us to go OL/CB in the first two rounds.  Every team has turnover each year, thats why you don't see too many teams making back to back SB appearances.

IMO, we dont sign Hardy because we need too many key pieces and we have a decent replacement in Alexander or Addison when Hardy leaves.
