LaFell Playing For His Next Contract

When I say consistency, I mean level of production. As I just posted, nobody is going to dish out sizable dollars for a player who sends the homiest of homers into a tizzy when he puts up a 5 catch game every 4th week. He needs to routinely be more productive, which encompasses every aspect of his game, but most especially his ability to beat defenders which he is downright below average at.

Ahh, ok.  You're right.

LaFell is at his best as a pass catching reciever when he's lined up in the slot.

If Carolina plans on moving Smitty to the slot next year, they aren't maximizing LaFell's talents IMO. However, as Smitty gets older he's better suited for the slot as well. Our top 2 WR's are arguably better lined up in the slot.

This seriously needs to be the year they draft a WR like Kelvin Benjamin in the first round and get there big, physical outside WR.

A lot of users on here don't realize how much more there is to being a WR besides catching the ball. lafell understands his role and his assignments every week and is improving every season as a playmaker.

I'd love to have him back and I know everyone on the team wants him here. I won't be surprised if they give him more money than y'all expect.

Ah, the Huddle. The varying opinions just keep coming. Sure we need a Stud #1WR. That does not mean however, that we still don't need Lafell, and even Ginn Jr.

If we do get our #1WR, we are still going to need Lafell and Ginn. Unless you want to go to war with just 2WR and Olsen. Think about that for a moment. We are still going to need a #3 and #4 WR, and if we get rid of Ginn and Lafell we have to add 2 WRs anyway. Might as well keep those two. They are both worth their roster spots.

Am I the only one that has noticed how physical Ginn Jr. has become. He no longer falls down for impending contact, he doesn't head out of bounds after the catch. He gets hit, and he gets up and is ready to continue. I never thought I'd see the day where he was this physical. He has worked his azz off for this team. He deserves a decent contract as well. Fair market value, and he stays.

Lafell does a lot of the dirty work some of you seem to want to do without. Not me. He deserves fair market value, and I am hopeful he gets it from us.

And please stop with the he is a #3 at best. It shows your lack of effort to think things through. Stop thinking in terms of Fantasy points, or fugging Madden. Lafell is solid, and he is an important part of what we do.

Lastly, get over the drops. Everyfuggingbody drops passes. Sure it is frustrating, but it is no where near the epidemic some of want to make it out to be.

I realize that some feel that Brandon LaFell isn't the kind of receiver to be filling the No. 2 slot, but if you look at his stats, he continues to grow into a quality possession receiver.

He has seen increases in receiving yards and touchdowns since his rookie season. Based on the growth of Cam Newton and his increasing role in the offense

I don't want to beleaguer the point. But...it just seems like too many fans expect every Panther to be All Pro. And when they aren't, we need to replace them. Too frustrating. Especially with everything Lafell does for this team. It's like they cannot see past the drops to a guy that does so much of the grunt work.

Oh well, you can't please everybody all the time.

I'd rather have someone else. Faster and taller.

And I'd really like to have two of those guys and Smitty in the slot. And let's face it, Cam is missing an outside receiver. Lafell is not that guy, He is a "solid" #2, and we could find someone better than him for a #2 WR.

LaFell isn't a guy to turn the tide of a game. When the team isn't playing well, he will not step up and make a play to change momentum. Instead, he snowballs the bad play.

Also I believe he plays better with roster competition. He dropped nothing in 2011 while trying to overtake Legedu for the starting spot. He was mostly OK last year with Murphy flirting with the #2 spot. This year he was basically penciled as the starter before training camp and his rookie hands have returned.

Because of those factors, he should get lowballed on the guaranteed money, but have incentives to keep him productive. He is a good player and I like him, but he doesn't need to get complacent.

I sure do disagree.

As far as these "big" drops go.

I think the Zona drop this year is really the only one that was "big". The play after he dropped the one in Tampa, Cam rushed for 20 yards or so erasing the drop.

The play after the drop in San Fran, Tolbert rushed for 20 or so the next play to pick up LaFell.

The one in Nola I guess killed a drive but the whole team played like crap that game.

Last year however he dropped that bomb that hit him right in the hands that would have been a TD. And on a 3rd and 15 play against Dallas early in the game, he dropped what would have been a first down.

In the big picture 4 drops isn't alot. But they are concerning because they come on easy plays. I believe this is just a lack of concentration on LaFell's part and not a talent issue. At 27 years old you shouldn't have to worry about concentration problems from your #2 WR, so he does have some issues but we all already know that.

Saint drop IMO was big. We had driven into Saints territory every possession (first 3) until then....and that was the lone quarter the Saints dominated TOP and put up all there points

Even then, that's only 2 meaningful drops so far. Although he has been targeted alot more Smitty has 2 huge drops this season as well. San Fran, 3rd down and Zona in the end zone. Drops happen, I see it all the time when I watch other NFL games.

LaFell isn't targeted a whole lot due to the offense Shula runs, so when he does have a drop we don't forget it as easily.

I still think that New England game was a good indicator that can be productive when given the chance.
