Saints Starting Rookie Terron Armstead At LT Sunday...

So are you intimating that SP is somehow trying to set his team up for failure?  Or maybe he senses that they are going to not fair well against our D so he is building in an excuse so he doesn't have to take the blame?

I mean if you dont accept the assertion that the rook is better than the guy he is replacing and gives the Saints a better chance at winning what other possible explanation is there?

I dont think this kids is going to be the next Anthony Munoz, or at least not this weekend, but dude has to be substantially better than the guy he is replacing to make up for his inexperience.  Again SP is no imbecile.

all i'm asking is if he is substantially better than the guy he's replacing, then why has he only been active four games and seen absolutely no offensive snaps?

i think that payton's back is up against the wall and he was pissed at the performance of several guys...hence the shakeups on the roster.

i think he believes that brown is bad and pretty much anyone will do. i think he's gambling. yeah, payton's smart, but that's not going to turn a rookie with no experience playing in the most important game of the season in a hostile environment into something good.

if this kid were substantially better than brown, then why wait this long to let him see any action at all?

i think either this is an act of desperation or it's something meant to motivate brown.

either way...whoever is supposed to be blocking hardy won't be doing it alone.

1. Peyton is starting a rookie in the biggest game of the season for both teams

2. Armstead has been compared to joe staley

3. I know Hardy can bull rush him and cause problems but he is athletic and powerful enough to hold his own

4. Lets not make any underestimations

If Armstead is such a stud, why is he getting his first start in week 16? LOL

I hadn't given much thought to the desperation slant and I could see that.  SP doesn't strike me as someone prone to rash decisions but his squads hold on their playoff slot is substantially weaker today than it has been since week 9 so ok...  It makes more than a little sense.

Im still slightly more inclinded to believe that the rook is a step up from Brown.  If Brown is 5/10 then maybe the rook is 5.5/10 or even 6/10.  I honestly dont know anything about him.  But if I believe that NFL HCs are not by and large idiots then I have to think there is a method to the madness.

On that point we very much are in agreement.

Here is Armstead's Predraft Analysis

Strengths Armstead is a fantastic athlete for the position. He is light on his feet in pass protection, and nimble when on the move. Agile, moves well in space, shows the quickness to get to the second level and cut off linebackers. Has been asked to pull all the way across the line and has shown effectiveness in doing so. Bends and redirects well. Extends his arms to keep pass rushers at bay. Not overwhelmed by defensive twists and stunts. Does a good job of selling play fakes, draws, and screens.

Weaknesses Needs to improve lower body strength. Can get bull rushed back. Faced sub-par competition. Needs to speed up hands, and be more consistent with his aiming point. Gets to the second level quickly, but will struggle to locate his target, gets lost in space. Will lunge at defenders with his head down in the run game. NFL Comparison Duane Brown

Bottom Line

Armstead has been a fast riser in the postseason process. He's got an intriguing athletic skill set. Despite facing sub-par competition in season, he's shown the ability to be a good pass protector, and contribute as a run blocker. He can likely stay outside, although some teams might see him as a guard. He could find himself as a Day 2 pick before all is said and done.

I don't trust Payton to tell the truth. He will probably stay with the guy that beat us last time, but hoping we are studying the rookie instead of whatever new formations or plays they are going to be dialing up this week.

Time for Kraken to earn the big money next year, and he needs to show that he can help us defeat the road block standing in our way during big-time games. The secondary also needs to be playing like they want future contracts. Real playmakers show up when their team needs them the most.

That is just about the way I take this.Payon could also switch offensive tackle positions for the game. Something about this whole deal sounds suspicious.

Learning protection calls and plays

O-line especially the tackle positions are difficult to master, you have to be aware of db and lb blitzers, de/dts alignment etc

so for his first experience in a game situation you put him in a hostile environment where the crowds could be very loud and disruptive against one of the two best defenses and across from one of the fastest and strongest DEs in the league playing on the best DL in the league?

lol yeah, sounds like a great situation to pop your cherry.

not buying that at all. he has had absolutely no offensive snaps. the only reason he is seeing the lineup at all is because payton is tired of brown. he "saw all he needed to see" from him.

Oh I see, so he's the next Joe Staley but they held him out until now while he learned the playbook and protections... LOL

Most of the comparisons I heard about Terron Armstead involved Bruce Campbell, so good luck with that.

Sounds like Sean Peyton is brimming with confidence...

"I think Terron has improved during the course of the season, taking scout team reps, and it's time to see what he can do,"

So in other words, he's looked good as a glorified tackling dummy.

BAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
