Lafell's blocking has won us games.  His blocking has sprung big plays, yesterday was not the first time he has done that. Lafell is the guy on a basketball that hustles, deflects balls, and sets great screens. None of that will come up on a stat sheet, but it's vital to a teams success. Should he be our #1 guy...no. I doubt he ask for a big contract and his play warrants him staying.

You could do much better, too. You're #2, like you're #1, needs to do one thing above everything else, and that's catch the ball when it's thrown in your direction. I don't care if you're #1 is your home run threat and your burner, even if you're not the dynamic receiver on the squad you still have to be counted on to make a play. And no one with a drop rate like LaFell can be a quality #2 or even a mediocre #1. Until he proves he's got the ability to go up and fight for a ball, and (this one drives me nuts) catch the easy ones, I'd hesitate to look at him as a viable #2.

 

As of right now, he's good, but easily replaceable, and I certainly wouldn't pass up a quality WR in the hopes that LaFell would develop into that role.

 

 

You could easily replace him with. . .who, exactly? If you discount the teams that have two #1 class receivers (like the Falcons when healthy) you don't actually have all that many good #2s. Would you trade LaFell for Lance Moore? Harry Douglas? Brian Hartline?

Some of you people are making Lafell out to have anemic catching skills. Lafell has caught balls that have extended drives in critical situations. Thers is a difference between being inconsitent and having the dropsies.

I could go on, but you get my point. Some of these #2 guys actually are fighting to be considered #1. And LaFell is in a different class than any of them. There are lots of good #2 guys in the league, and many more will be coming out in the draft. I'm not saying LaFell shouldn't be #2 right now, I'm saying he's decent but if we have the opportunity to upgrade the #2 wide receiver position through FA or the draft, we should take it rather than holding out hope the LaFell will develop into a #2 of the caliber of the guys mentioned above.

I'm glad LaFell is a damn good blocker, but he's not a TE. I would rather he show up to make more catches/tds than good blocks.

LaFell could develop into a Jeffrey type (who benefits from playing across from a prime Marshall. Steve Smith doesn't draw defensive attention like he used to anymore.) Decker still has drops and disappears for long stretches, plus has Peyton throwing the ball 50 times a game. Floyd would be a #1 on most teams (so doesn't it the classic definition of a #2.) Nicks has disappeared entirely. Baldwin would get a long look.

 

I guarantee you that if LaFell was allowed to walk he'd have a line of interested teams who'd love his size and physicality.

yea, that's the only one that is questionable.  He definitely has some advantages over Lafell such as stretching the field but he is older and probably not nearly the blocker that Lafell is.

 

The other two guys are a no brainer over Lafell.

there is no receiver that doesn't drop passes in critical situations.

 

it's just that when it happens on your team, it seems like you can't get over it. Smith and Olsen and D-Will have all dropped them this year  but they are too big and Lafell's errors are much easier to blame.

There isn't a more frustrating player for Panthers fans than Brandon "Donald" Lafell. One week he looks like a rookie, the next an accomplished veteran.

 

Does this sound like a guy you want as your #2 WR. Your second best WR? The heir apparent to Steve Smith with one foot in the commentary booth? That's the guy? Really?

 

If it is, then I think you're naïve, and come offseason we should find a better option.

 

Great he can block. That's like saying, "but she's got a great personality."
