need a treadmill

Recommended Posts

The wife wants a treadmill for Christmas and I need to get off my arse and use it too.  Don't want to break the bank and neither of us needs a bunch of extra bells and whistles (like heart monitor and such).

Any recommendations on brands, where to buy etc.?

Do you have a Play it Again Sports around where you live?  If so, check them out.  They sell used stuff that is in great shape and sometimes you can get a pretty good deal.

I agree with what a lot of people are saying above...  Treadmills are cool when you first get them but they lose there allure pretty quick and end up getting used as a clothes rack.  Are you close to a Planet Fitness?  A gym membership for two would be a pretty cool Christmas present and it is cheap! (Like $10 a month I think)

Now that I have a little more time, what are the fitness goals of your wife and you? If you have no goals you will get no where. Most low end treadmills aren't well built as they it seems the manufacture anticipates it becoming a clothing rack in a month or so. I have gone through two ellipticals and three treadmills before I finally bought a gym membership. The benefit of a gym membership is that is is the equipment breaks, it's will be repaired by not you and your wallet. Planet Fitness isn't bad, but if you get serious about lifting, you may run into problems. The stigma that gyms are full of judgmental people is something that I have never seen, provided you don't do stupid things in the gym. Use good form, clean the equipment when your done, put stuff away when you're done and you shouldn't have an issue. The biggest judgment you will encounter will probably be your own. The guy that has a six pack tat isn't brewed by Miller started somewhere. Make a solid plan and stick with it. If you just buy a treadmill, hop on it occasionally, and hang your jacket on it, you will be in the same position you are now. Treadmills and gym memberships aren't some magic silver bullet that makes you fit, diet, effort, determination, and self control will.

TL;DR version: Get a gym membership and sensibly control your diet.

When we made the purchase last year we ended up with an elliptical. Cost and features worked out to make it a better deal and there is no belt to wear out.

edit:  We bought a Livestrong floor model from Dicks and got it at a pretty deep discount.  Ive been very happy with it.
