SteamOS! Out in the wild!

halo epitomizes everything that is wrong with console gaming

but if Steam OS can't run directx, it will fail

I doubt any linux OS will ever be able to run directx(maybe through wine, but that will always be a day late and a dollar short).  The only hope is that the steambox makes a splash and developers start switching over to opengl.  But there's a bit of a chicken and egg scenario going on - steamos can't be successful without having a good library of games playable on linux, but there won't be a big selection until steamos is successful.

I reallllly hope it happens but at the moment I'm skeptical.  If it does I probably still won't get steamos, I'll just switch over to ubuntu and remove windows.

it is open source so there's nothing stopping them from writing their own application layer to handle it

if they do that, then someone may have to port their work back over to ubuntu.   i really don't know enough about linux, but i would assume it would be possible.

Gaming has took a hit mostly because of greed. DLC that released the day the game is released is bull crap.  What happened to the good old days of unlocking characters and outfits? now they charge you for that, and eventually release the same game with the dlc added on a year after the fact. It also being cheaper than what it originaly was, basically giving the middle finger to people who purchased the game at 60 dollars and bought the dlc. Why not just wait to release the game with all the outfits/characters on the first run instead? Its a money racket. Take into account microtransitions which help make the game easier. The thrill of beating the game without help and getting unlocked stuff in the process is long gone. Sure you could say dont download them, but still.

Oh and most games have to be patched because delevopers dont know how to test the game. I hate quick time events and interactive movies. For crying out loud i want to play, not set here during a 5 minute cutscene ugh!

Ive never used steem and i dont have a computer that can handle newer games. I can be truthful and say i am a noob once it comes to figuring out what the different types of graphics cards and cpu and which one is best to get the most out of a game, so i wouldnt know where to begin to build one.  I haven't chosen xbox1/ps4/or wii u. though still have my ps3/3ds.  Ive leaned against pc gaming for the most part because of first person shooters/world of warcraft like games. Neither one being games i enjoy.  The orignal doom being the only first person shooter i like, all the others are just overated and suck to me. I think fps are overfloading the market.

I prefer action adventure/hack and slash/ and platformer games. I started gaming during the nes era, so maybe its nastalgia playing into that.  Even though its hardware isnt up to snuff i'm actually leaning toward a wii u. mario and legend of zelda fit my style, not to mention a yoshi and kirby platformer coming in 2014.  I dont know what it is, but i enjoy colorful worlds that that can not exist but only in gaming. Seeing just brown everywhere doesn't do it for me. I like mature games games like the gta series, mortal kombat, and the older resident evil games (5-6 suck). I'm not a online gamer, id rather play single player with the occasion racing/fighting game with someone actually with me instead.

Anywho i dont know what console or even pc games have to flood a topic or get butthurt if their choice isnt loved by everyone. Arn't we all playing games to have fun? well long as you are who cares if you like xbox/playstation/nintendo/ or pc. The better each one does invidually the better games we have. More compitition is a good thing.

That's what wine is.  You can already play a lot of windows/directx based games on linux but it will always be playing catch up.  For linux to be a viable gaming platform games need to be playable on it right out of the box.  OpenGL is already cross platform.  There's no reason not to use opengl to create games other than the fact that the entire industry has been using directx for over a decade(companies want to hire devs with the skills need right now, not wait for them to learn a new api).

Since they are pushing Big Box so much, I really think they are going to rely on streaming from the PC to the Steam box for games that wont run on the Linux based Steam OS.

Which is a pretty big bummer because I think steam OS has a ton of potential but if they don't get their OS to run DX properly then it's going to be dead in the water from the start.

Yea they could use Wine or something they made themselves to run compatibility for those games, but it isn't the same and you run into a host of other issues by doing that.

There's going to have to be some give on the part of Valve with the Steam Box and Steam OS for it to be successful and the major point on that is getting DX to work properly. Regardless if they think OpenGL is faster or not, they need to have native DX support for it to work.

Here's something from Eurogamer taking a hands on spin:

Lots of possibilities but still lots of beta bugs.

wine isn't that great though.  couldn't it be done better?

It is what it is.  Just a  community of developers trying to get it done.  Open source certainly isn't free.

Maybe valve could put some resources towards it but to make a noticeable difference would be a TALL order, one that could bankrupt the company.  It seems like valve is really pushing opengl though.  Directx is dominant right now and the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

its fun to play what's wrong with that?

Typical PC elitest that doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.

I'd say from a competitive multiplayer stand point halo 4 is probably the best FPS to come out since COD4.

With that said I had hi hopes for BF4 but because of the sheer amount of bugs in the game it keeps me from ranking it above H4.
