SteamOS! Out in the wild!

Downloading now, servers seemed bogged down. They should have used torrents Imo. Thankfully people are uploading torrents http://steamdb.info/blog/35/ I'm fairly excited seeing as its a Linux distro and GNOME works. Apparently steam is just the "Big Box HD" for now. Already alot of useful FAQ's out and solutions to common problems. Wanted to add that if your new to Linux i'd suggest holding off and reading up on it instead of diving in head first. The installer will format everything on your PC. Future versions will allow for partitions of Debian-Steam/PC (Windows) but unfortunately they are not there yet. Apologies for the wall of text just wanted to add that in. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

Yeah I'm gonna do the same on my gaming PC but I use an old laptop to try out new builds like the steam one. oh not to detail the thread but a leak got out that the winter/holiday sale for steam will start on the 19th through January 2nd so if your wanting to buy a game maybe hold off till the 19th and find it for 40‰-80‰ off heh. they tend to offer great deals during those sales. Same with the https://www.humblebundle.com/. can get 3+ games for whatever price you see as fair. You can designate how much of it goes to charity. But....Halo 5?  Uncharted....  PC gaming is so WTF?

=P

While the PC elitists poo-pooed the console thread, I stand by my position that I want everyone to be successful.  That will hopefully allow for more and better games.  I'm super interested in SteamOS as an option.  I was very bullish on the PS4/X1, but that's cooled off as they are too immature software wise right now.  Not to mention neither one has given me a real reason to want them.  I'm still good on my 360/PS3, and one day building a compact gaming PC that I can use as a HTPC to boot.  Steam OS being free would make that last one a bit cheaper!

Back on topic, I read in a rumors article about the for sale steam boxes which included a GTX 660/760, i5 4xxx, 16gb ram, 500gb HDD for $500 with a steam controller.  Man, if they can deliver that, I'll skip building a PC.  Though I still like my Halo...

I'm looking forward to more in-depth reviews coming in the next few week.  For right now, everything I read about Steam OS is "Hey, it's a Debian install with Steam! And it plays Linux Steam games no problem!"  Which is about what everyone expected.

But the underlying thing I understand from the early reviews is that it just works.  If you meed the spec guidelines, it JUST WORKS!  Which I find rather refreshing!  MS and Sony could really learn a lesson from Valve there.  Something that just work day 1 would be fairly epic.  I think that since its based on a fairly popular distribution of Debian, new software features should be added pretty easily without borking the rest of the machine.

I am curious to see how the Streaming nature of the steam box works as well.  Having your gaming monster in your office, but have a simple streaming box where you can stream your games to your big ole' TV or Projector.
