For those talking about re-structures, yes, they could be done. With DWill it's not like we take any significant penalty if we cut him post June 1 next year, so in his case it's not like it's a huge problem whatever we decide.

Stewart's case is totally different. To lessen his original cap charge, he was paid below market up front, but the overall contract contains approx 21 million in guaranteed money (going off memory here). Most of that money has not been paid yet, so restructuring it would mean a long term commitment to a guy that may never be able to live up to the deal. His deal is much more problematic so we'd better pray he can come back strong. If not, he's going to get a ton of money to sit at home on his couch.

i really think hurney jumped headfirst into an empty pool with williams/stewart's contracts in a full retard attempt to cater to fans of a failing team.

Why wasn't Hurney sent packing with Fox? He wanted to trade up in the first round (which would have cost us the first overall pick later) to grab Jimmy you know. Awful GM for the most part.

Well the "spending spree" has lots of narratives. 

 

Beason: No one thought this was really that bad of a deal. Sure Beas was coming off an injury, but I THINK it was his first. He was arguably a top 3 MLB at the time and the de facto leader of the defense. I don't fault Hurney for this.

 

The Kicker that shall not be named: This looked and felt stupid AF. Kasey was cut over politics. He was the Player Rep for the team and showed up during the lockout. "The Kicker" was really just a guy and Hurney paid him like he was a HOF dude. 

 

Olsen was arguably his best move and that was a simple extention.

 

Johnson: HE was and is still being paid for future production. I disagree with the article that he isn't a star player. He is an excellent DE but his nature and the media treatment of the Panthers prevents him from getting lots of notice. He is also still under 30 I believe. The premium came when Atlanta came snooping around, this drove Hurney into a panic and he over paid by likely 1-3 mill a year. This contract also likely kept Atlanta from playing in the Superbowl last season and that has a ton of value to me.

 

Godfrey: Another contract likely written for future production. He was/is such an up and down Safety that Hurndog likely thought he would become an exceptional pro in the next couple of seasons. Of all the deals it was at least structured so we can release him this season and "make" some cap room.

 

DWill and Stew: This was a deal by a guy that wasn't paying attention to the league. These two contracts are awful and no excuse is valid enough to hold water. Maybe he thought 2008 was right around the corner? Maybe he thought ...fug I don't know what he was thinking. Had we let Williams walk we would have likely gotten a 3rd or 4th round comp pick that could have been spun into a RB to replace Stewart after his contract was up or better yet complement Stewy while started under a more reasonable contract. It's almost as if Hurney didn't even look up from his glass of scotch and notice the trends in the NFL.

 

The Kalil deal is the only one that made any sense top to bottom.

 

My theory on many of these deals boils down to Jerry Richardson trying to mend some wounds with the players and the fans, while proving a point to the media.   JR mailed in the season before the lock-out, bottom line he went cheap and stole money from PSL owners by not putting out the best product possible. It protected his profits and the jobs of people he likely walks by everyday. When the smoke cleared the Panthers not only had wasted the lost season of 2010, they had fuged up their cap for the next 5 years or so. 

 

I WANTED the offseason to prepare the team for future greatness. Let DWill walk, get a comp pick for him. Extend Beason, Extend Kalil, Re-sign CJ, dont fug over John Kasey, don't resign Godfrey for that much money.  Sign a WR, Sign some young OLine guys, Fix the defense over the course of a couple years.  

 

The final piece of the puzzle was the divorce of Fox and Hurney. Had Hurney been sent packing when Fox was sent packing this whole ordeal would have been avoided. However, Hurney was a JR man. If JR poo the bed in the media, Hurney fixed it. If the team was sucking ass, Hurney jumped on the Media Grenades to insulate JR. Hurney was JR's fall guy for tons of issues and JR rewarded him by keeping him around when he should have fired him or moved him to "President of Football Operations" or some bullshit.

Sorry people, but we are stuck with Stew AND D-will next year.

 

Stew is obvious as there is no way around his enormous accelerated cap hit if he's cut, it's way too much to handle on an offseason where we need all the cap space we can get.

 

D-will won't be cut either for two reasons.

1) The cap space he frees up is minimal for what he does. An outright cut would actually lose us 3 million in cap space this season while a June 1st cut clears up barely more than one and a half million while carrying dead money over to next year. Not worth it.

2) We need a quality back on the roster in case Stewart stays injured. We have no idea if Barner is going to pan out.
