DB's vs Drew Brees

Pretty interesting point brought up about our defensive backs being unfamiliar with Brees and kept falling for what he likes to do, unlike Godfrey who is familiar

If you can't watch the video, try IE. Starts at 7:30

Anybody think this was the case and we'll be better prepared on Dec 22nd ?

The fact that the game on the 22nd will be on natural grass will slow them down quite a bit. That turf in New Orleans is very fast and even. Brees has the timing down like no other.

However, a slight change in that and the timing is off, he is much less comfortable.

No one on the face of the planet or, perhaps the universe, can stop Drew Brees in the dome with no pass rush.

Our secondary didn't so much get exposed as they did play a great QB who had too much time.

As I saw on the internet one of the reasons Seattle shut them down was because of their coverage(with linebackers as well) being so good causing Brees to hold the ball longer than usual

our CBs were so unbelievably bad sunday last night it was borderline funny even for me as a panthers fan.

i made the observation sunday night that I could log onto the huddle after we got burnt and see people saying "UGH THIS ZONE!" and make mention them that it wasnt a zone- our CBs were just so far away from the receiver it looked like a zone. they were getting beat that bad and when we started pulling away players from the middle the field help with the slants and such is about the time Graham went off working the deep center.

i will say that the good news is that it looks like our safeties seemed to be unprepared rather than just terrible, but our CBs were just flat out burnt time and time again in combination the aforementioned not knowing Bree's tendencies and such.

if we wanna do better, they have to step up simple and plain. i do think we'll get better safety play when we see them though. that seemed to be largely mental. hope it turns out that was the case for the CBs as well

The bad thing about Drew Brees and other 'elite' QBs like Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers is that they know that the pass rush is coming, so they call quick plays that gets the ball out of his hands in 2 seconds or less.

Our guys last week were still pressuring the QB like they always do, but the difference was that Brees was getting rid of the ball.

We need a good adjustment against accurate efficient qbs other than just rushing the front 4. We have to do more blitzing and switch different coverage schemes more often.

The secondary got picked apart Sunday night. They guys are not bad as a unit, and are about an average NFL squad, but their lack of extraordinary playmaking ability, and bland defensive coaching is why we got burnt.

I expect a few tweaks in the gameplan next time we play them.

I agree with you fundamentally, but if I hadn't seen the very same Brees get manhandled the week before, I would probably believe that our DBs are better than they really are.  I will give you this: Rivera is known as a defensive guru, and McDerm has proven not to be a slouch, so I expect us to improve greatly in 11 days. I believe that we can cover over a lot of deficiencies by sending an extra man, whether it be Mitchell, Davis or Kuechly.

Brees isnt a new qb.  Theres tons of film on him.  Also, I can understand if the DB's fell for it once or twice but for 4 quarters?  The Secondary played poorly and should not use any excuse except for that.

    • Start with Bryce, this is like his rookie year. The 1st 2 games proved her was wired wrong and it looks like (we hope) he needed a time out to reset and be the player that was drafted. He's still about a year or more away from being a top 15 QB, if the Panther give him another playmaker or 2 (a top WR and a decent TE) and maintain that line. Canales deserves credit as playing that card correctly to motivate (or refocus) his QB for one last shot to decide his and the Panthers immediate future. As a Panther fans we should hope he keeps improving as we invested so much to get him. CJ Stroud will never have a season like he had, even if he stays a top 10 QB. He's got great character so I'm rooting for Bryce to continue on his positive journey. Canales is playing the week to week thing with bryce perfectly. Nothings guaranteed, earn it weekly which builds consistency and consistency is greatness.  Keep the O-line. They've got to extend Brady C, along with Mayes that have a real good 7. Great job Morgan starting with the big guys upfront.  I really hope they draft a DE or OLB in the 1st round. Getting Brown back with A Robinson and what DJ has shown that we can have a decent D-line. Need a CB in the early rounds/ or a time FA to go with Horn.  The future as to next year being good enough to challenge for the division is within reach. Just show progress (win or lose) every week. Kudos to Dan Morgan. Plays GM like a LB. Tackle the problem and move on, don't just hope it works out. Find guys with your playing mentality and work closely with your HC to share a vision. Teamwork starts at the top and flows down.
