Once again lets discuss Greg Hardy for a sec

Point blank, is it worth it to resign him?  I'm thinking we would have to pay him at least 8 million a year, or at least that is as far as I would pay him if it were up to me.  Yet again, with that same amount of money, I could go out and greatly build my secondary in signing guys like Jairus Byrd and Charles Tillman. (Though with Byrd, he might actually command more money than Hardy would)  Or I could concentrate that money in bringing in offensive talent, although the only big receiving name out there is Hakeem Nicks and I don't know if I would want him.

My evaluation is Greg Hardy is definitely a great player and he brings attitude to this team.  Yet for the cap space he is going to eat up, I would want him to be a consistent guy who gets after the QB.  I don't believe he disappears from as many games as Julius Peppers did (and Peppers was a much better talent), however Hardy hasn't been a factor in some games this year.  I believe Frank Alexander could kind of fill the void if Hardy wasn't here, especially as Star and Short continue to develop.  So for me, the best strategy might be to spread the wealth around, whether than pouring a decent amount in Hardy.

I'd make him a reasonable offer - no way he gets huge $$$.

We can't afford to pay huge and hopefully he understands that and can show some loyalty and patience.

If he wants to leave, then yea I think Alexander can handle it and we'll mail him a picture of the team holding the Lombardi.

This team can't mortgage the future like it has in the past.

I'd love to keep him, but I just don't know if we can.  I'm not sure I want two big money DEs.  Could CJ possibly restructure?  I don't know.  All I know is that 99.9% of the Huddle was onboard with keeping both DeAngelo and J. Stew and now they're just killing our cap space.  Gettleman could get creative with the structure of the deal, but I don't know.  We'll just have to see.  Addison has looked good when given opportunities. I don't view Hardy as a MUST sign.  We gotta put some money in the offense and I don't mean more RBs.  OL and WR.  Some CBs too.

Hardy is a huge part on this defense. Our defense would look very different next year without him next year. IMO, he's worth 8 mil a year (5yr/40). But I can't see Gman offering anything more than a 7mil contract, possibly 6mil for a 2year contract. That'd be my dream scenario. Anything more than 8 mil, I'd let him walk. Use that money toward an OT in FA and fans will think that they hate this idea but bring Peppers back if he's willing to come back. You can always find DE through the draft and develop one for the future too.

I hope he stays, but I have a feeling we won't be able to afford him. Which sucks, as without him our defense will take a step back.

    • Was just reading the Ask the Old Guy story on the team's website and was shocked to see that only two 2nd Rounders have signed so far, 30 of them haven't. That isn't normal, the Texans really screwed things up for the rest of the league, no other explanation that I can think of for 30 of the 32 picks to still be unsigned at this point.
    • They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.
    • Except it wouldn't be Rodgers leading them on a postseason run, it would be the defense and he's there to not screw up their great games. Which is why..... This times a million. I didn't watch a ton of the Jets last year, but from what I did see, Rodgers himself didn't look like a bum, the team just struggled and was more than likely due to poor coaching on the whole.  The Steelers don't need MVP level Rodgers to win games, they just need him to be good enough to make some plays when it matters because the defense is keeping them in games every week regardless. In their 7 losses last season, the Steelers scored 10, 13, 17, 17, 17, 19, and 24... while giving up 19, 20, 24, 27, 27, 29, and 34 in those games.  With only marginally better offense last year, they probably end up winning a few more games too. They only scored over 27 points in 3 games last season. I think this is a great move by the Steelers and if Rodgers can stay healthy all year, will get them back into the playoffs and could make some noise if their defense is up to the normal level of a Steelers defense.
