My reason for optimism going forward

The only thing that really bothers me about the loss is all those dumb Saints fans that feel reaffirmed in their beliefs that Cam stinks and Drew Brees is a God.

I willy be happy if we finish 11-5. We had some great memories this year with the Patriots and 49ers games. But I feel like any talk of Superbowl is over. Our ceiling is a wild card victory at this point.

People really need to settle down and keep an even keel. We had a bad game. In pretty much all phases. It happens.

I like this team and I still think we can beat anybody at anytime. We had a collective off night. From the players to the coaching staff.

This one just stings a lot worse because of the POS saints.

Who cares what they think. Even if they had lost, they'd still be saying the same things they always have been, and are now.

I found :

1.  the play calling on first down mind boggling.

2,  the Panthers continuance of trying to run that flanker freaking screen or whatever it is ridiculous and an interception return for a TD to happen on any play.  How many years and failures with that play is it going to take for that play to be torn out of the playbook.

3.  the lack of bravado, confidence, smiles, playing loose, playing like champions to be really concerning.  I saw no fire from anyone, not even Smith.  Rivera saying they were 'over-confident' laughable.  What title have they won in the past 6 years that would constitute over looking anybody.  It was very important IMHO, for the Panthers to fight back.  They didn't.  No fire from any leader on either side of the ball....I felt like they want to say 'hey Drew, awesome to spend this time together, enjoyed it man'.  Great teams can get a pass for the occasional bad game.  They have earned it.  This team has earned nothing.

4.  Gano is beginning to be good for missing one field goal a game...can't have that.

They have had a better season than I ever thought they would...but the holes that were exposed last night, lot of work needs to happen in a hurry, with a draft position that is going to be most likely between 25 to 32 along with a harder schedule due to their record.

Best hope for a good free agent class.

Hey, I said it a couple of weeks ago: the team has exceeded my expectations from what I was looking at in September. The more that they won, the more I wanted to believe that perhaps we could reach that ultimate goal (this year that's why I wanted to trade for Gordon). I thought with a little luck that we could sneak by some more solid teams. I believe that's still possible, but I don't think that it's likely. Our WR corps, O-line, and defensive backfield need an upgrade. We knew this going into the season. The only thing that I expected that we have not really been getting is more pressure from our edge rushers. To me this is a real question (with Hardy's status and Johnson's high dollar contract).  Can they dominate like we all envisioned, and have seen in spurts? G-man will fill holes through the draft and FA, but how will he handle CJ and the Kraken? At this point I am just gonna enjoy the ride for what it is and look towards making personnel improvements in the off-season by draft, FA, and even finding an answer or two on the roster. The only thing that could kill my vibe is multiple losses for the remainder of the season and missing the playoffs.

You cannot possibly be serious.  The guy is 20/23 on the year and I'm pretty sure all three of his misses were pretty long.  We should've never been kicking the 48 yarder he missed last night.  You can't kick a FG when you're down 24-6 to the Saints in the 2cd half.  Time to Riverboat it.

I'm glad it happened now - in the dome. Got a wake up call with enough season left for it to matter. Honestly, anything over 10 wins is a bonus considering Gman has only had 1 year to rework the roster. I see this as the opening act of a consistent winning team. No way anyone could realistically expect us to be in the SB this year - playoff berth this year, serious contender for the future.

As for needs - everyone has their own opinion (WR, DB, OL). I see O-line as the building block on offense. legit o-line that can open running lanes will solve alot of the WR issues. Really need some bigger DB's that can cover m 2 m

I am serious.

I  miss in San Fran, a miss in NO...have to hit in big games.  Ask the team he came from, the Redskins.  There is a reason they boo him when introduced.

His stats are on NFL.com.

Ron's call to kick or not to kick has nothing to do with Gano missing or not.

My point is simply when things stop becoming automatic, they need to be addressed.  The miss in Frisco was huge.  It was a pressure kick, it was missed.

We have no idea how this guy will do under pressure.

A miss also becomes a positive for field position.  If he feels he can't make it, tell his coach that.

You pointed out the one that he missed in SF, how about the 53 yarder he hit that ended up being the game winner?  You conveniently left that one out.

I think some of y'all are just trying to create poo to bitch about.  We have an Olsen bashing thread, a "are the rookie DTs hitting the wall" thread, and now you're in this thread hammering on Gano.  Olsen, the rookie DTs, and Gano have been some of the best things we've had going for us this year and yet some people are still gonna bitch because they're not the hands down best players in the league at their positions.  Unbelievable.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
