Greg Olsen has not been impressive this year.

For what it's worth I like him.  He is dependable and has great hands. Sure he isn't Wesley Walls but he doesn't have to be.  If we had a strong 1st or 2nd option he would be worth that much more. It's our lack of a WR threat that allows the opposing team key on him whenever they want.

1. Dude has been playing through a foot injury almost the entire season.

2. Stats from one year to the next are consistent.

Without a significant threat at the #2 or #3 WR spot, opposing defenses are simply putting a nickle DB or a safety on him. If there was any other receivers on the Panthers requiring something more than cursory attention, opposing D's might think about putting a LB on him, where he might stand a chance of gaining separation.

The bottom line is this:

#6 TE in the league (receptions)

#7 TE in the league (yards)

#9 TE in the league (TDs)

#5 TE in the league (getting 1st downs)

#4 TE in the league (catches for 20+ yards).

He's not the hands down best player in the league at his position, so meltdown Huddle logic = he sucks.

What was your expectation?  Olsen has done very well and is right on track as compared to everyone else within this system.  I think maybe the bigger thing is that no one really thought the Carolina passing game of 2011 and 2012 would change this drastically into something way more focused on short, underneath stuff.  We knew there would be changes and strategies to mitigate a weaker offensive line, but not necessarily that the long game would disappear almost entirely.

Greg Olsen is 6th in receptions, He has been targeted 40th most in the NFL. Olson is 16 catches behind JG for the TE lead. Graham has 33 more targets though.

Olson is 7th in yards.

Tied for 9th in TDs.

Is tied for 4th in 20+ yarders.

5th in first down catches.

Jimmy Graham is in an offense that was special even before him. All of those guys put up numbers. He is also a special player. Jordan Camera is good but he also has help in that Gordon kid nobody can cover. The attention goes there first. Tony Gonzalez is the greatest tight end of all time. Olson is on a team that is commited to running the ball. They are not in Cleveland, Atlanta, or in New Orleans. If Olson was on any of those teams he would likely have much better numbers as well. It is a slap in the face to claim a player who is top 10 in all categories for his position, and is in a more conservative offense, is just an above average player. He is somewhere between great and a above average. He is likely the top 1-2 guys in the great category after your elite 2-3.

It may be a combination of his play, the plays called for him, and Cam but I there is something missing from that position. He's the best TE we have had since Walls and his play is similiar....it's just the NFL is different now than it was back in the 90's.

I just sent Rivera a text letting him know you feel Olsen is not living up to your expectations. That we need to utilize him better. Or, maybe we should just upgrade the position. When I hear back, I'll let you know what he said.

Never, ever, complain about threads again. After this mess, you have no leg to stand on.

Kids.

Olsen is a top 10 TE. Sorry that is not good enough for you. Next you will be saying that 9-4 is just not cutting it.

Well, Ron just answered me. He says he will talk with Shula and see if there is something they can do to rectify the situation. So, I guess you were right. Who knew.
