Can the Panthers run on New Orleans?

teams have been stacking the box against us all season, and Cam has beaten them by spreading the ball around and making opportunistic runs of his own.  we don't need to pound the ball up the middle, we just need to get 1st downs.  we have a balanced offense, so we can take advantage of what the defense gives us.

I want more play action passes. We have a dizzying amount of rushing options, possibly the most one team has had in NFL history, yet almost every fake handoff is a Cam run. We should be confusing defenses more.

I'd like to see Tolbert as a featured back with Jstew as relief. And for God's sake keep DeAngelo to outside runs and screens.

You're joking, right?  We run play-action passes all the time.  It's probably the biggest staple of our passing game.

Current New Orleans Rushing Defense Rank: 16

The best defense we can have on Sunday will be via our own offensive run game. If we can run the ball, keep the clock moving, and more importantly keep Brees on the bench we will win this game.

However, the run game has struggled a bit as of late, with the exception of Mike Tolbert.

Deangelo and Stewart have been non factors.

So what do we do? Use Tolbert as the feature back? Designed run plays from Cam?

Do we keep feeding Deangelo the ball even if he gets no gain or worse?

We can start Kenjon Barner.

I think we are going to see every type of blitz known to man. Whether its a run blitz or passing.  I think we need to do a lot more screen passes than what we have been doing to try an neutralize it.  The only factor that no one has been able to account for so far is cam running.  I would like to see more designed runs for him this game.

We can spread out the run game pretty well, but I think we'll keep the run / pass balance unless we are up by two scores by the end of the 3rd. Only then will we begin to come unbalanced and use the old ground and pound to sit Breezy.

Feature the back with the hot hand and balance the rest of the gives to the other 2 backs. Just leave Cam 5 or so plays to get him revved up :)

Can Carolina run it?   Sure, and they'll absolutely try.

Ryan's defense was gashed by the Jets on the ground, so he screwed around with it against SF. They're running five linebackers at times; I wrote some nonsense about it, let me know if it made any sense.   I guarantee you we're gonna see this  a few times and will see the formation a few more with Vaccaro still on the field. I also go into a bit of why the Saints use a Big Nickel instead of the 3rd CB.

Anyway, will they run it?  I'm sure, even against the stack, they will. There will be some failures and I'm guessing the Saints will run blitz a fair bit too. It won't be exceptionally effective, but the team will probably squeak by with 100 yards and play a lot of field position.   This defense is a bit different from the other top Ds we've faced, since the run D is more suspect, but they go to heavy lengths to not get run on lately, too.

The Saints have the 16th ranked rushing defense only when measured by the total yards they've given up on the ground.  When you look at yards per carry, they drop down to 27th.  Last year they were the worst rushing defense in the league, and their personnel is, if anything, a little lighter on talent with the injuries to Greer and Smith.  Yes, they scheme better, but they also have the luxury of a great offense allowing them to pin their ears back and go after the passer.  That won't work against the Panthers.

If there's one thing I do believe in where Shula is concerned, it's that he will stay with the run.  It may take a while, but we will start breaking through the Saints, and mounting those long, sustained drives.  As long as Cam keeps doing what he does on third down, we're going to be in great shape.
