MMQB Cam should be more like Brees

Come Sunday night, these two quarterbacks will square off in the first of two meetings over the next three weeks that will likely decide the NFC South crown. Newton has guided the Panthers to an unexpected 9-3 record by relying heavily on his attributes that can’t be taught. His 447 rushing yards rank third among quarterbacks; his six rushing touchdowns are first. His powerful arm has converted 28 times on third-and-10-or-longer, fifth most in the NFL.

Read this earlier. While I completely agree that Newton definitely needs to be more consistent with his footwork (which affects his accuracy and always leads to 3-4 WTF throws per game), I think his pocket awareness is pretty good and I disagree with Benoit in that it seems like he thinks Newton isn't good at reading the field. I thought it was a bit disingenuous for him to pick an example from Week 1 about his ability to read the field (against a great D and with a new OC and QB coach's system to implement).

Newton's gotten progressively better at reading the field as the season has gone on and as he's gotten more comfortable with Shula's playcalling and his own ability to audible and directly contribute to the offensive gameplan (I'm reminded of this great article by FO comparing Kap and Cam and their ability to go through their progressions: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/film-room/2013/film-room-kaepernick-newton).

The breakdown between static and hybrid defenses was really interesting though. Definitely the next step in Newton's growth is being able to decipher disguised pre-snap coverages as those definitely give him the most trouble. But I would think in general those types of coverages are the ones that give most QBs in the league the most trouble.

A somehwat reasonable article that seems to fail to consider the significant strides he's made during the course of this season.  No one here would deny that Cam can improve his accuracy and consistency (both things that he's made big improvements on this year), but saying that he needs to be like Drew Brees is inaccurate.  Saying that he needs to continue the same skills that Brees has developed is a much better way of putting it.

I'm not one to nitpick, but when talking about footwork, it seems as if every game Drew Brees is having to throw a jump pass.  He literally leaves his feet in order to heave the ball over the outstretched arms of the line, given his short stature.

I'm not selling Brees short on his abilities as a passer, not at all, but I don't think you can put Cam and Brees in the same conversation about how they play from within the pocket.  The physical differences are too great.

As soon as writers start crediting Cam's success to his "physical attributes"....as soon as writers keep trying to add to that played out stereotypical view of certain QB's, I stop reading and hope they get raped by a bear.  Cam is in year 3......Brees was getting literally poo on in his year 3.  The writers argument is invalid.  I bombed his twitter with hate mail too.  fug this guy.

Lol this guy had to go all the way back to Week 1 to get the pictures he needed to back his point.

Either it was tough to find any after that or he apparently didn't spend much time watching us to begin with (which a lot of his other "points" also suggest)

Cam's pocket awareness is pretty damn good! Isn't Brees like 10 years older than Cam?

Yeah, I responded in the comments. It's readily apparent he didn't pay much attention to the schematic demands of the Carolina offense or the circumstances surrounding some of our games.

Nice response, hit on some things I left out such as how the O-Line was more overwhelmed than Cam with the pressure in these "hybrid" games

    • Canales was brought in to fix Bryce. That was how he sold himself. He failed.  the panthers need a new qb, someone to coach him, and someone to build a defensive staff.  Canales has failed at developing a new qb. His big draft project XL is trending towards bust. His entire nfl resume before the panthers was one season as offensive coordinator on a stacked Bucs team, and being on the offensive staff when a 31 year old Geno smith finally put it all together. And he didn’t even pick his offensive coordinator. Assuming evero is gone, who’s he got in that phone to call? What low lvl porn addict evangelical from the bucs is ready to be Peter principled? There is nothing in his coaching history or his current performance that indicates he’s the person to move this team forward. Every other team knew this last cycle (panthers were only interview) and nothing has happened to change that perception   all people like you have is “well you can’t do it again it’s too soon but <random interval of time> will be different.  just pull off the bandage. There’s no reason to let this guy draft “his guy” except people wanting an excuse not to fire him after 2025.
    • Both Reich and Canales were saddled with trying to build and establish a viable scoring offense around Bryce Young. The best the offense looked this season and last season was with Andy Dalton who is also terrible but still better than Bryce Young. Which should be all anyone needs to know but still somehow there are weirdos here salivating over a ceiling of maybe on a really good day the 25th best QB in the league. We've already canned one entire staff over our first overall pick. You can fire everyone again to satisfy your need for vengeance and quickly come to the realization that your next hire will absolutely unequivocally be a downgrade yes man or you can blow up this QB room and then assess. If no progress next season then you can make changes and justifiably so.
    • Surprised this is the only post with this take.  This is like the Rhule kiss of death lol.
