PFF: Star is the best run stopping DT in the league

Star is an absolute stud, however Short's play gets looked over a bit.

Star:  432 snaps played:  34 tackles, 2 sacks

Short:  393 snaps played:  21 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery

These two will be anchors of this d-line for many, many years.

ok, it moved.

I will applaud you, sir, as you accept an award at our end of the year ceremony in New York.

We have one hell of a scouting dept, that's for sure.

Newton

Kuechly

Lotulelei

Hits on the 1st round three straight years

That's insane

It goes back further than that:

2001: Dan Morgan

2002: Julius Peppers

2003: Jordan Gross

2004: Chris Gamble

2005: Thomas Davis

2006: DeAngelo Williams

2007: Jon Beason, (Ryan Kalil in early 2nd rd)

2008: Jonathan Stewart, Jeff Otah

2009: Traded away (for Jeff Otah)

2010: Traded away (for Everette Brown)

2011: Cam Newton

2012: Luke Keuchly

2013: Star Lotulelei

I'd say absolutely all of those were hits. Dan Morgan and Otah washed out due to injury issues.  Same thing with Beason, but he'd still be a solid MLB for us if not for Keuchly, and he gave us several pro bowl years before the injury.  The only misses were the picks we traded away.

Those 1st rounders from 2002-2008 were a huge reason that the 2008 team was so good.  Remember, that team went 12-4 and dominated a lot of teams, despite Jake Delhomme already beginning to struggle some after returning from Tommy John surgery (remember the Oakland game that year?).

Luckily for us, some of those pieces are still around providing great veteran leadership.

The heart condition, 13 other GM's stupidity, and, quite honestly, the murder/suicide in Kansas City. That's the only thing that stopped us from winning 6 straight last year to finish. NO WAY, IMHO, does he get past the Saints (or any other team), just one more pick down the board.

The scouting dept was shaken up after the 2009 season.

We have got all our picks next season, plus some, so I am looking forward to seeing how we address our needs.  Marty always did well when he was able to overcome his moronic tendency to trade his 1st round picks but his last few drafts were pretty poor outside of his first pick.  Hopefully Dave will be able to mine some gold in the mid and late rounds.  Based on what we have seen so far, I am optimistic.

Star is going to be very good for us but from what ive seen from short he could be a VERY dominant 3 tech for us cant wait to see what gettleman does on the offensive side of the ball this offseason

Agreed. I have a feeling our Oline will be as dominant after the 2014 draft as our Dline is now. Just like the Dline, it's the biggest area of need and I have a feeling Gettleman will make it a strength. The picks won't be popular at the time (just like Short), but it'll have huge pay offs, as the running game will all of a sudden wake up and Cam will be able to just sit in the pocket and fire heat seekers all over the field.

"but his work in the run game (which peaked this week) has been so good he’s the stand out rookie."

Yet Star is the top run stopping DT in the whole league by their own analysis?

Richardson is a DE. He has a 12.4% runs stop %. He has played much more snaps than Star as well.

Scouting department or a little luck?  Newton was clearly the pick at 1, we almost took Barron before Luke, and Star fell into our laps as the only DT we probably would have taken there.

Hopefully we can get some more luck next year in order to land a big time receiver or shutdown corner.
