Am I the ONLY person on this board who is not the least bit worried? We swept them last year, and we're better now while they are generally the same. And they just played Seattle, and nobody wins the week after playing Seattle. And it's Cam on the national stage, a formula that has meant his best games.

As long as we show up focused, we win this one and it ain't even close.

Said it in another thread.

I ain't even worried.

When did this fan base get so damned cocky?  It's starting to get annoying.  I think we absolutely CAN beat the Saints, especially if we go down there and punch them in the mouth.  But, to say that you aren't the least bit worried to play against Drew Brees in New Orleans is certifiable.

 

That or you do not pay attention to any other team besides the Panthers, which is fine I guess but it makes our fan base look stupid and cocky.  

 

I'm worried about this game however, I'm ok with the outcome because I really feel like this team has some character, heart, and has the tools to make a strong playoff run.

 

The best part about the Panthers right now is that this wasn't even part of the plan.  Gettlemen was setting them up for the future and it turned out that the future is right now.  I think its awesome especially considering the holes we have in some important spots.  I mean we have a former defensive tackle playing guard right now for a 9-3 football team.  We had an undrafted rookie starting in the secondary up until this week and have a former kick returning specialist making plays in the passing game.

 

You add some depth on the offensive line, a couple starting caliber corners and a dominating wide receiver, this team could be good for a while.

It's not so much cockiness. We RARELY get outclassed by NO, historically. Sure, we've lost games to them, but we've also beat them at times when nobody gave us a chance to. I don't see NO as this mighty force. Sure, Brees is great and COULD tear us apart. But based on my knowledge of this team and seeing how Seattle got after him, yeah, I'm feeling confident. It's not stupidity to have history and facts on your side. I'm not saying we'll dominate. We can very easily lose if we don't show up for 4 quarters. That's why I qualified my statement with IF we show up focused. If we don't, or if there's a breakdown in coaching/adjustments, we lose this game, because the Saints are good at home.

Don't like confident fans? Go to Tampa Bay, because they expect to lose. Maybe that's more your speed.

The Seattle defense bullied the Saints and that is what we have to do...I have never saw a unit as hype as the Seattle defense was last night, after every play that they won, they let the Saints know about it. I think it got to them.

Definitely. If you're beating a team and you're celebrating after every stop like you just made a goal line stand on 4th and goal in the waning seconds of the Super Bowl, it definitely taxes on your opponent's morale. We have some fiery guys, so hopefully we can duplicate that same sort of intensity for 4 quarters. I want that dome silenced early and I want to hear a pin drop come the 4th quarter.

It's not confidence when someone says "I'm not the least bit worried"...its arrogance.  It's an 8 game winning streak and the idea that we can't be stopped.  I never said that I expected to lose, I do think we have a very thin margin for error.  If we play like we did against Miami we will get blown out similar to what happened in Arizona earlier in the year.  

 

We have NOT played great on the road this year losing to Buffalo and Arizona, not to mention a last second victory over Miami and an 11 point effort in San Fran.  We did blow out Minnesota and Tampa on the road but they aren't in the same class as New Orleans.

 

I think there is plenty to be worried about, we have to play our best game of the season and we need to be physical, harass Brees and not turn the ball over.  This will be a good game but to go into it thinking this is a lock is premature and to be honest, I just can't let myself feel that way.  The only game left on the schedule I see as anything close to a lock would be the Jets, its at home against a team with a bad offense and little to no vertical passing game.  I'll be right there with you against the Jets, but I just can't do it this week.

Is it better to blitz heavy or sit back in coverage against dink and dunk teams like the Saints?

 

There are a million answers to this question. But let's slant it to the Saints.

 

Brees: Short by NFL standards. Not a scrambling QB. Gets frustrated, little-girl Brady style.

 

Our D compared to Seattle's D: Seattle has a stronger secondary, we have a stronger LB corps. So we will play the Saints differently but similar.

 

McDermott will mix up the blitzing although I believe we will blitz more than usual. Saints are Miami x 3. So think the 2nd half of the Miami game + 3 times the intensity. When we blitz, we need to do it to collapse the pocket, push the line into Brees, and stop the RB from chipping to the outside. Probably safety blitzes because our LB'rs will be covering the underneath which will include stopping play action which we have been very good at.

 

In all cases, discipline and good football basics will have us winning that battle at the line. Staying in your gap, good tackling, getting off blocks. We don't need to necessarily sack Brees. We need to block his downfield vision and be prepared for those side throws. Our secondary absolutely must know their assignments and stay with them - DO NOT even try to watch Brees, he will misdirect them all night.
