CBS Sports: "Cam Newton or Russell Wilson?" [Video]

I'm pretty sure I already debunked this weeks ago, probably the same poster too.

These guys are consistently good no matter what team you put them on, they will find a way to have good stats. They just won't win as many games in the end, the only difference.

No it wasn't me.

But you do realize, that there were many QB's like Drew Brees, Steve Young, etc.., (who rode the bench, and/or had to get traded) on/from one team before they achieved success. So you see it as 'they eventually are good'. While others see it, as 'they have to be in the right system'. That's well known. So now you're going to tell us, 'Alex Smith is now good'. And if he is, he wasn't earlier in his career, and/or needed the proper system?

And it was clear that Wilson was a game manager his first ten NFL games, and wasn't ready. And that was with good coaching, defense and a run game to rely on. It's the same with Griffin and Kaepernick. If you would have placed either of those two on the Panthers--Cam's first two years, I don't think they have the same success as Cam (especially in conventional alignments), until the offense was tailored to them.

No ones saying Wilson's not any good now. But I think Cam's size and pocket presence, combined with his similar QB skills, travels better from team to team than Wilson (though he's good). That's really the take away.

Yeah, but I can understand a lazy fan being that way. But any analyst (especially a former player), can just pick up the phone of someone he trust in Charlotte, the Panther organization or the NFL to know the truth.

Cam's work ethic, dedication, respect and humility to the game, his teammates, coaching and the media, have always been at a very professional level since his arrival. And the fact that Boomer can take one post game presser out of 48, and try to make Cam appear selfish, is not only the farthest thing from the truth, but totally wrong, and reeking of personal agenda or bluster.

Didn't they learn their lesson last year from RG3 regarding young QB worship (though you could see much of his selfishness and security, which the media ignored)?

You would think with the amount of money that these "analysts" get paid they would actually bother to do some research at their job or just open their fuging eyes, either one would suffice.  I can understand the common fan misperception of Cam especially where I live.  Every football fan I talk too pretty much repeats what Boomer said about Cam and you're right they could never be more wrong.

Remember the ridiculous 3rd and 12 that Russell Wilson converted against us on their only TD scoring drive in the season opener?  He was nearly sacked twice but he managed to escape, and while running BACKWARDS, he launches what had become a 25+ yard pass and places it right on the side line at the sticks where only his receiver could get it.  Plays like that obviously have a little bit of luck involved, just like Cam's scramble against ATL, but they also require special players to pull off.

Cam is special.  Russell Wilson is special too.  I'd still take my guy, though.  But it's not like it's some completely insane notion that there are some people out there who would take Russell.

i know. i've posted about how that was the most insane play i have ever seen. Cam's play against atl wasnt luck. russel wilsons kind of was. but he had the athleticism to pull it off. it was a prayer throw. not many if any could make that play. and out of 10 times i think he only pulls that off once.

Cam against atl you can't teach that kind of athleticism and thats not just lucky. Or the run against tampa bay and the redskins his rookie year. Cam has been doing plays like that his entire football career starting at auburn.  Nobody at the qb position can even touch that kind of athleticism, elusiveness, speed and power.

its not a completely insane notion, but if you actually watch the games and compare the two, its just a bit funny that boomer is screaming intangibles when Cam has willed this team to win this season. The defense has surely helped. but Cam has single handedly won games against elite teams these past 3 weeks (minus the bucs).

i love RW. i love the kind of player he is. But i don't really see any advantage RW has over Cam in any tangible or intangible way. They are both winners. Cam made "winner" type plays his entire NFL career. The team just finally caught up to him.

I love Sharpe for that comment. Its basically what i have been saying all this time, its stupid to always set Manning and Brady as some kinda standard for QBs. NFL and sports in general is about evolving and finding talent in different ways and aspects. Its stupid to criticize a player because they dont resemble Peyton Manning. AKA ONE fuging SUPERBOW AND A LOSING RECORD IN THE PLAYOFFS IN HIS  CAREER.

Our offense cam's rookie year was pretty much unstoppable especially when you compare it to the Jimmy era. Our rushing attack was one of the best, both stewart and deangelo were averaging 5.5 yards a carry and had like 800 yards each. We had two great tight ends Shockey and Olsen, and Smith and Lafell. Pretty good situation if you ask me. Our defense sucked so we still went 6-10.

Wow, the hate that this man has for Cam is not rare. Lots of "national" media folk spit the same dislike for Cam. Terry Bradshaw comes to mind. I've come to terms that nationally Cam isn't EVER going to get the respect that he deserves because of "reasons". What I've noticed during this 8 game win streak is the common, "I need to see more........" At first, Cam needed to win 4 in a row.....Then it was, "during this win streak, they haven't really beaten anyone....." but bashing ALL OF THEM. Then, it was, "We'll see about Cam during this three games stretch with the Falcons, Forty Whiners, and the Brats. After the Panthers win those three games to make it 4, 5, 6, in a row they STILL NEED TO SEE MORE?? What more do you need?? Haters, I tell you. Hatin won't get you anywhere.

I get all your points.  :thumbsu:

I got another: Cams critics almost universally said he "needs to win" and improve in the "short passing game", right?

Well guess what? "Wala", the Panthers are now 9-3, and Cam is not throwing down field nearly as much (due to a crappy offensive line) with much more short stuff. Goal post move again.

So now, according to many of them, Cam's a "game manager" and "relying on his defense", cause he's not throwing down field (as ludicrous as that may sound to Panther fans, and the fact this wasn't cast upon Wilson, Kaepernick, and RG3 last year, as well as Luck--this year).

They say this, though they fail to critique why (O-Line), and the fact that Cam still has to be a play maker for the Panthers to win (along with the Panthers have had many big leads, chewing up the clock, so Cam hasn't needed to compile as much passing yards). But of course, we're never told this.

You can't make some of this up? LOL/SMH

i think this is what "commentators" clue in on. we were unstoppable offensively. Defenses adapted. We lost shockey. or running game became inept because of too much read option. our line regressed, our recievers regressed.

there are a number of different variables of why we weren't winning the past two years. I put Cam in the bottom 5 reasons (i have like 20 reasons why).

I posted this in a pretty football knowledgeable group on facebook.

Most pick Wilson, with no reason given. One gave the reason cuz "Wilson is a better pro and has much more upstairs", tho admitting cam is more talented.

The one (so far) that's said Newton... a Bengals fan, said "Newton, But love Dalton"

I'd pick Cam, I've seen what he can do every game.  but with the "track record" and the Media over hype... I'm not surprised people pick Wilson over Cam right now.

RW is basically a mobile Drew Brees. Cam is a more athletic version of Steve Young. Its a win win, and really depends on how you want to run your offense. They are both good/great QBs.

no. awful comparisons.

RW is nowhere near drew brees in the way they throw or anything.

and steve young? lol i grew up watching steve in the bay area.

no one is against somebody being as good as Cam. in fact i would embrace it, specifically RW. He's my second favorite qb in the league.

the comparisons and "intangibles" comments are just ridiculous.
