CBS Sports: "Cam Newton or Russell Wilson?" [Video]

the superman thing is for Cam's brother for christs sake

It bothers me how no one seems to know this. Cam isn't some arrogant guy that most media people makes him out to be because of the superman. He normally has a reason as to why he does something. Just like the towel over the head is to be like Mike.

Cam is a freak of an athlete like you said in your previous post. Has all the talent in the world, it was literally just a matter of time before it all clicked. I don't know why that was so hard for so many to see. As far as athletic ability goes I'd rank him close to my fav athlete of all time, another Auburn dude...

I hope we can lock Cam up this off season so we don't have to worry about during next season.

As far as RW goes, I think he's good too but that comment "you have to plan for Seattle offense where as you have to plan for Cam newton" I think hits the nail on the head. Wilson does a great job of extending plays and picking up yards with his legs when he needs to. But he is not the threat that Cam is. Not even close.

Ok, I watched the video.

And though there are a lot of things we can criticize Boomer said, I'll take this one: Boomer talked about Cam being "up and down".

First of all, besides that being not wholly true and an exaggeration (as we all know, Cam has been fine since the middle of last season with the occasional 2 to 3 INT game); Russell Wilson was never asked to do as much in Seattle as Cam was with the Panthers; so of course Newton's going to make more mistakes.

Wilson had the luxury to sit back and rely on this defense and running game, while Cam was breaking records from day one in the pocket. Despite the Panthers current defense; Newton is still asked and relied upon to win games. That's not always the case Wilson (or at least it's not always the plan). Panthers can't win with out Newton making plays.

Even now, the Panthers have no run game, a questionable offensive line and receivers who don't make big plays, and Cam still gets it done. The reasons why Cam is winning now (besides himself in a comparison to Wilson), is the coaching. Rivera has gotten much better since the Buffalo game. Wilson had that advantage [to] since day one in the NFL as well.

boomer is an ass. i mean that guy was taking this personally in that it had nothing to do with talent. boomer just doesn't like cam as a person. there's no way his opinion can be considered objective.

cowher >>>>>> boomer

shannon sharpe >>>>> boomer

marino>>>>>>>boomer

Boomer has the common misconception that a lot of people have about cam. I will never understand it but I could really give a fug less as long as hes our qb

It's really just comes down to preference. I didn't watch the video so I don't know how they phrased the question.

Really a matter of:

Efficiency vs. Total production

Athleticism vs. IQ

Their ceiling vs. as they are right now

Better pocket passer/runner/scrambler

..You can't really go wrong either way

can you maybe elaborate on IQ?

seems to me Cam's football iq has progressed and I havent really seen RW displayed so much that it would be something to compare to Cam's.  I havent watched all of their games but from what i have seen. RW just makes things happen when you dont think it is possible, a la Cam. It's not so much IQ though.

Yeah, but I can understand a lazy fan being that way. But any analyst (especially a former player), can just pick up the phone of someone he trust in Charlotte, the Panther organization or the NFL to know the truth.

Cam's work ethic, dedication, respect and humility to the game, his teammates, coaching and the media, have always been at a very professional level since his arrival. And the fact that Boomer can take one post game presser out of 48, and try to make Cam appear selfish, is not only the farthest thing from the truth, but totally wrong, and reeking of personal agenda or bluster.

Didn't they learn their lesson last year from RG3 regarding young QB worship (though you could see much of his selfishness and insecurity, which the media ignored)?

football IQ is all that matters and i don't see wilson being ahead of cam at all.

nothing about cam shows an inability to grasp and command his own offense, progress through all his reads quickly, and read an opposing defense.

nothing about cam shows an inability to grow in his understanding of his role as a QB or as a leader.

he came out of the gate looking like a freak QB/athlete who was much further along in his passing game than even his own supporters knew and he's done nothing but grow and improve over time.

someone said in this thread that wilson has peaked. i don't know how accurate that is, but i don't think there's much better than he can be.

cam truly has a higher ceiling. we haven't come close to seeing what cam can develop into.

As much as I like Wilson, and I do. You have to look at it this way. If they were to switch teams (especially their first 1-3 years), how would each perform on the others respective teams?

Unfortunately, I don't think Wilson or the Panthers would do as well if he was in Charlotte. And I think Cam would actually do better on the Hawks (though you can't argue their record this year).

Based off of that, I don't see any "football IQ" of Wilson being better than Cam, except for the supposition that since Wilson was a QB longer that makes him automatically smarter.

Wilson, was spoon fed hist first 10 NFL games. He wasn't ready. He was the classic game manager, who wasn't put in the position to win or lose the game for his team. Obviously, Wilson learned down the stretch to win games. But as we saw from Cam's inception, that was cast upon him from day one (even now, when the Panthers don't throw down field as much).

I think Wilson came into the NFL more equiped to be a "leader of men".  Wilson had 5 years of major college football under his belt by the time he came into the league.  He had been through adversity on the field and knew how to communicate with his teammates in a constructive way.

It was a learning experience for Cam coming in to the league.  Thomas Davis had to get on Cam last season because he would always work out alone, away from his teammates.  He would be aloof with his head phones on in the locker room.  Steve Smith callled him out publicly for his body language.

Cam didn't have the luxury of 4-5 years of college to learn how to be a great teammate.  It speaks to the type of person Cam is that he took a hard look at himself and was able to mature into a legitimate leader on this team.

All this to say, RW came into the league more "pro-ready". Cam needed to go through some hard times to become a better teammate and field general.  But Boomer is totally baseless to say that RW is more mature now.

This video makes me wonder:  Has Boomer even seen a Panthers game this year?  He sounded like someone who has a clear bias against Cam and is clearly uninformed.  If he prefers Wilson over Cam, that's fine.  It's his prerogative.  But his reasoning was just flawed.
