Brandon LaFell a #2 WR? (LaFell vs Moose)

Yes, 2004 is statistically one of the best years in the history of the league for a wide receiver. He led the league in Yards, Touchdowns, and was sixth in Touchdowns. He was 13 catches away from the triple crown. He did this with Keary Colbert on the other side of the field.

By DVOA, it was like the 16th best season ever for a wide receiver back when I looked it up last. I don't have premium anymore.

This is not a controversial statement.

Moose always beasted in contract years, no doubt.

If I had a choice between Moose and LaFell at the same age, obviously I would take Moose. But seeing that LaFell has been the third or fourth option in the passing game, how would I know I'm not making a mistake?

I don't realistically believe LaFell could ever give us a 1400 yard season, but as a third or fourth option, he's solid. When he's your number one or two, then you have problems.

Moose carved himself out a pretty good career. Whereas, Donald has started on a solid career. Moose is definitely the better WR, but the Donald is not that far behind.

We finally developed a solid #2 WR.  I hate to think we would let LaFell walk in free agrency.

Not sure how many folks around here would agree with who actually developed who here. Some will tell you he plays as if he has never had a lick of coaching. But some will tell you Ricky has done a job with him this year.

I saw a list that had Lafell at about 50th. Which sounds about right. Hope he and G-man can work out a compromise.

LaFell currently has 40 receptions (tied for 53rd in the NFL) 495 yards (61st in NFL), and 4 TD's. LaFell has been targeted 66 times (53rd in NFL) (61% completion rate).

Sunday IMO is the perfect game for LaFell to step up. Matthews (Miami) and Burleson (Detroit) each had solid games against Tampa in the last couple weeks. Revis plays the number 1's tough, LaFell needs to step up and show he's ready to take on the challenge.

I agree that this is a week Lafell could really shine. The way our Corp. is set up, it really can be any man at any time. Teddy has had multiple good games, Olsen has more than a few, Smitty has lower #s because the targets are down.

Then there is Lafell. Having a very productive year. If we do nab our Stud WR, that still leaves only 2 WR on the roster. Hope Teddy wants to stay, and then it is 3. Or if he leaves that leaves 2 spots that need to be filled. So how G-man fills in the bottom of he chart out there is going to be of interest.

In today's NFL, money talks. Can we match what Donald may think he is worth? The question becomes, "Where does Lafell put his value? And are we close? So, 2 questions I guess.

He played in an offense that didn't spread the ball around a lot, which helped his stats.  He caught about 30% of the team's completions, which was the year after Smitty caught 32%.  The next year he was in Chicago while Smitty was busy catching 38% of the team's completions.  A big part of his success was a result of being the first option in a system that didn't use a lot of receivers.  Had LaFell been in that offense, there's no reason to think that he wouldn't have also had a very good year.

I really liked Moose, I was sad to see him go, and was happy he came back.  But there's obviously a bit of system to his success in Carolina, particularly in 2004.  In Chicago, he did nothing to show he was a number one, and after a few disappointing years he was let go.

BTW, it's worth noting that back in the early 00's, a lot of huddle posters criticized Moose in the same way they do LaFell now.  They acknowledged good blocking, but complained about his speed and drops.

I guess in 10 years we'll have another thread like this where we compare a young receiver to LaFell, and declare that he doesn't measure up based on selective memories.

Yep and that's what it all comes down to. Will LaFell be realistic when negotiating a new contract? If so I think he will be back, If not then he'll be gone.

With it being such a deep draft at the WR position, it will hurt a guy like LaFell's market value. That will play to our advantage. However, with the holes we have on the OL and at CB I'm not sure we can afford to go double dipping at the WR position.
