Brandon LaFell a #2 WR? (LaFell vs Moose)

next year we will draft a number one receiver or we will grab a top-tier guy in free agency. we will keep steve smith and we will keep ted ginn to return kicks and punts and remain a deep threat.

lafell will not be content to play WR4, and chances are he'll demand a salary much higher than what we'd pay a WR4.

brandon lafell is gone

LaFell like capt last year will find his services are not as highly regarded as he thinks. Also LaFell is our 4th option on our team anyway with Olson.

looking at the recent numbers of guys who where considered #2 WRs on their team

Mike Williams 5 year $40.25 Million, $14.6 guaranteed

Brain Hartline 5 year $31 million, $12.5 guaranteed.

are the panthers willing to pay lafell this type of money?

Both Williams and Hartline had big statistical contract years

Williams had 63 catches, 996 yards and 9 TD's. Williams was targeted 127 times.

Hartline had 74 catches, 1,803 yards and 1 TD. Hartline was targeted 128 times. Althought Hartline is the No.2 WR now in Miami that year he was the No.1 guy.

If the Panthers offered LaFell a contract somewhere is the 5yr 20 million range. How would you feel about?

Maybe LaFell wants to play a bigger role in an offense and will look to get No.2 WR money like Hartline and Williams. Like alot of our upcoming FA's it's going to depend on whether or not they want to play in Carolina and take less or money, or chase the money elsewhere.

they did, and both had previously been considered some what #1 guy or played the role of one before their teams bought Wallace and Jackson in. that type of contract is something ideal if the guaranteed money is around $7 or $8 million. i feel like his role as a #2 in this offense is large, but if he went some where else, he would be a #3rd or #4th guy.

Agreed, I think if LaFell ends up chasing the money he may end up shooting himself in the foot.

Moose wasn't really any better than LaFell his first two years, but in his third he became our #1 receiver in an offense where we passed the ball 571 times.  For most of his career, our receiver corps looked a lot like today's would without Smitty in it.

LaFell's the second receiver in an offense where we're on track to throw the ball 490 times.  His first two years were better than Moose's were, despite spending one of them with Clausen throwing him the ball.

In Moose's first two years, he caught 52 balls for 724 yards (13.9 YPC) and 1 TD from Kerry Collins and Steve Beuerlein, which represented 9.2% of the team's total completions.  In his second two years, he caught 24% of the team's completions, at 164 receptions for 2,194 yards (13.4 YPC).

In LaFell's first two years, he caught 74 balls for 1081 yards (14.6 YPC) and 4 TDs from Jimmy Clausen and Cam Newton, which represented 13% of the team's completions.  Through today, in his second two year's he's caught 84 balls for 1172 yards (13.95 YPC) and 8 TDs, which represents 14.7% of the teams completions.

In 1996 our starting WRs were Mark Carrier and Willie Green, and Moose was probably the fourth option behind Rocket Ismail.  In 97 he was still fourth on the depth chart, this time behind Carrier, Carruth, and Ismail.  In 98 Green was gone, Carrier was old, and Carruth was busting.  That was his first year starting, and he started across from Rocket Ismail.  In 99 he broke out with a pro-bowl performance, staring opposite Patrick Jeffers and ahead of second year man Donald Hayes and a disappointing Carruth.

In 2010, LaFell came off the bench as a rookie, behind Steve Smith and David Gettis.  In 2011 he played behind Smith and Nanee.  Last year was his first as a starter, but unlike Moose he was across from an established number one, Smith.  And that's been the case this year as well.

So basically, in their first two years LaFell has clearly outperformed Muhammad.  In their second Muhammad became a true number one, while Lafell has not had the opportunity to because he plays beside one.

Great post.

It would be interesting to see what LaFell's numbers would look like if he was given the opportunity Moose was.

I like LaFell alot actually. I think he could be on the brink of being a top tier #2.

The question is for the money, is he the right WR for this offense? He makes great clutch catches, but even if we keep him we still need to find that explosive WR with the potential be a #1 guy.

If he builds a little more chemistry with Cam he is going to look really good. Im not sure which game it was, I think it was Atlanta. Cam just missed LaFell on a one handed grab for a back shoulder throw. I had myself thinking, if LaFell makes that catch then he would really look like a stud.

There have been several plays like that this year. LaFell is kind of hard to gauge but at this point I'd rather keep him than let him go.
